Zoooooooooooooooooom!!

Right then......

If K.'s plane doesn't end up landing in the lake, she'll be stepping onto U.S. soil around three thirty-ish.
Of course we're researching to see if the flight's on time.
And of course we're anxiously awaiting her arrival.
And of COURSE we're not the least bit nervous. *rolling eyes*

This is a first for himself.
We've had 'THE mum'....now we're getting 'the OTHER girl'.
(yeah, yeah.....g'head and tell me she's coming to see US and not the house....I'll pretend I don't see you straightening and tidying and carrying on! LOL Silly Brit!)

The girl has plans for the OTHER girl. The two of them got along so well in England that she's taken the liberty to plan more than a couple outtings while the OTHER girl is here visiting.
Baseball, river floating, an O.A.R concert (don't ask.....I have NO clue), 'Wicked'.........and, of course 'going out on the town' apparently are on the agenda (amongst other things, I'm sure).

And, of course, all activities end or begin with "the Brit can grill out at the house" or "we can go out to dinner". LOL
She's smart enough to not say "And you can cook us a meal."
;-)

Oh look........the OTHER girl is in flight.
"That's IF her mother didn't get lost taking her to Heathrow........"

*rolling eyes*
Like WE've never got lost on the way to O'Hare.

Woooooohooooooo!!!!!
An adventure to Chicago!!
Ready......set.......GO!!!!!

Absolutely NUTZ!

OH.
MY.
GOSH.

I've decided my body is older than I wanna accept.

NOT that I'm not grateful that I've been given the privilege OF growing older.....this, I know, is a gift.

Excuse me while I whine, nonetheless. LOL

Laundry's done.

Kitchen/diningroom carpets shampooed.

Livingroom carpet shampooed.

Guest room dusted, linen changed....room rearranged and vacuumed.

Livingroom cleaned.

Kitchen cleaned (including the stupid refrigerator from the stupid bottle of Coke that leaked somehow......*grumbling*).
Entry way waxed.

Bathroom floor waxed and bathroom cleaned.

Garage swept (don't ask.....I had momentum going....LOL)

EVERYthing's vacuumed.

AND the flowers are 'fed'. AND the gardens weeded.......

Himself got home at three this afternoon, took one look at me and told me he was taking me out for dinner. (smart fella I got there, huh?! LOL)

"K.'s not coming to see the house, you know......she's coming to see us."
Yeah, yeah......well, the intent was to just rearrange the guestroom. And then I noticed the carpets needed cleaned....and then I remembered the mess in the refrigerator....and--Oh gosh.......I still need to mow the lawn...and let's not even talk about the mess that Coke made in the fridge.....ack... That was just gross.

Do you know the best thing about Red Lobster (aside from not having to deal with cooking and dishes)--the biscuits.
I ate three of 'em. THREE.
My 'old' body was suddenly happy. LOL

And we got home in time for the lawn to get mowed.
Barely.

I was rushing, I'll admit it.
It was getting dark. I was afraid for the lightening bugs getting massacred.

20 minutes after I put the mower away, swingin' on the patio--out they popped, happily flittering around, joyously blinking their butts at us. LOL

Oy.....my old body's tired!

:-D

Those who are mentally and emotionally healthy are those who have learned when to say yes, when to say no, and when to say whoopee!--Willard S. Krabill

Whoooooopeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!! :-)

. . . that is what learning is. You suddenly understand something you've understood all your life, but in a new way.--Doris Lessing

As we are changed by our experiences, that which we know also changes.
Our experiences foster growth and enlightenment, and all awarenesses give way to new understandings.
We are forever students of life blessed with particular lessons designed only for us.
There is joy in knowing that learning has no end and that each day offers us a chance to move closer to becoming the persons we are meant to be.

To understand something more deeply requires that we be open to the ideas of others, willing to part with our present opinions.
We discover new interpretations of old ideas.
And we will continue to expand our understanding.

Every situation, every person, every feeling, every idea has a slightly different hue each time we encounter it.
The wonder of this is that life is forever enriched, forever fresh.

Each moment offers me a chance to know better who I am and to understand more fully the real contribution that is mine to make in this life.

No more shrugging and guessing...

Yep....I'm the only one I know who thrills their better half by giving him a prezzie of measuring cups.

Yes, measuring cups.
THREE to be precise.
Easy to read with mL measurements, noless.
No leaning over to make sure you've got the right measure. (why that's important, I do NOT know........I'm a shrugger and a guesser!)

But when you hand over the box and he's grinning happily with "I got a prezzie!--You gave me new jugs!" and he happily hugs you and promptly goes to measure water from the tap...... you KNOW you've got it made.

No foolin'....
And if you think that's weird.....you needed to see how he happily played with the egg poacher prezzie!!
LOL

TFTD

Peace, she supposed, was contingent upon a certain disposition of the soul, a disposition to receive the gift that only detachment from self made possible.--Elizabeth Goudge

Self-centeredness, egocentrism, and selfishness are familiar to most of us.

We have judged our world and all the situations and people in it in terms of how their existence affects our own.
We have become tied to him or to her or to a situation just as surely as an anchor to a boat.

Most of us learned very early to read others' behaviors.
And we determined our own worth accordingly.
As adults we still struggle, trying to read another's actions, hoping to find acceptance.
Which means we are always vulnerable, exposing our "self" to the whims of other, equally vulnerable "selves."

What we search for is peace and security.
We think if others love and accept us, we'll be at peace.
We'll know serenity.
A most important lesson for us to learn in this life is that peace is assured when we anchor ourselves to our God.

Peace, well-being, serene joy will accompany our every step when we expose our vulnerable selves to God's care and only God's care.
We'll no longer need to worry about the self we try to protect.
It will be handled with care.

Peace awaits me today.

I am all that I need to be.

Diving into life

Diving into Life Headfirst

Steve Lyons will be remembered as the player who dropped his pants.

The White Sox were playing the Tigers in Detroit. Lyons bunted and raced down the first-base line. He knew it was going to be tight, so he dove at the bag. Safe! The Tiger’s pitcher disagreed. He and the umpire got into a shouting match, and Lyons stepped in to voice his opinion.

Absorbed in the game and the debate, Lyons felt dirt trickling down the inside of his pants. Without missing a beat he dropped his britches, wiped away the dirt, and … uh oh … twenty thousand jaws hit the bleachers’
floor.

Within twenty-four hours of the “exposure,” he received more exposure than he’d gotten his entire career: seven live television and approximately twenty radio interviews.

Fortunately, for Steve, he was wearing sliding pants under his baseball pants.

Now, I don’t know Steve Lyons. I’m not a White Sox fan. Nor am I normally appreciative of men who drop their pants in public. But I think Steve Lyons deserves a salute.

I think anybody who dives into first base deserves a salute. How many guys do you see roaring down the baseline of life more concerned about getting a job done than they are about saving their necks? How often do you see people diving headfirst into anything?

Too seldom, right? But when we do … when we see a gutsy human throwing caution to the wind and taking a few risks … ah, now that’s a person worthy of a pat on the … back.

So here’s to all the Steve Lyons of the world.

Here’s to the Miracles, a choral group out of Memphis, Tennessee, made up of the mentally retarded and the stout-hearted. Just see if you can listen to them and still feel sorry for yourself.

Here’s to the hero of the San Francisco marathon who crossed the finish line without seeing it. (He was blind.)

Here’s to the woman whose husband left her with a nest of kids to raise and bills to pay, but who somehow tells me every Sunday that God has never been closer.

Here’s to the single father of two girls who learned to braid their hair.

Here’s to the grandparents who came out of retirement to raise the children their children couldn’t raise.

Here’s to the foster parents who took in a child long enough for that child to take their hearts—then gave the child up again.

Here’s to the girl, told by everyone to abort the baby, who chose to keep the baby.

Here’s to the doctor who treats more than half of his patients for free.

Here’s to the heroin-addict-turned-missionary.

Here’s to the executive who every Tuesday hosts a 5:30 A.M. meeting for Bible study and prayer.

Here’s to all of you reckless lovers of life and God, who stand on first base because you paid a price to get there.

So what if you forget about pleasing the crowd and get caught with your pants down? At least you’re playing ball in the pros.

Most of us aren’t even in your league.

(And....yes, I know....'other people's opinions of me are none of my business'. Thanks for making sure this hit my email this morning..... )

I'm Blaming Bill. ;-)

Eight Random Facts About Mel

* #1 Go figure--I worked as a bartender once upon a time.

* #2 I worked as a private provider for a chunk of time......until (another go figure) I decided that I didn't like the rules. The office was nice though. LOL

* #3 I'm not ticklish.......and it's not like I haven't tried to be.

* #4 I have this 'thing' about stuff between my toes. (no, I'm not talking sock fuzz..) I refuse flip-floppy kinda shoe thingies or shoes of any nature which require anything between my toes. Ewwwwwwwww....ain't happenin'!

(wow.....I'm sailing through much faster than I thought I would!)

* #5 (and now I get stuck! LOL) Ummmm.....I don't do pink. (betcha some folks knew that....) I don't own one stictch of clothing with pink in it.....not even underthings or jammies.

* #6 I carry my Big Blue Book with me everywhere I go. And I mean everywhere. I won't leave home without it. It even has it's own little carrying case. LOL
Once upon a time it was 'required' that book be eveywhere I was and I got whapped enough times for not having it that, apparently, I'm forever trained TO carry it. I have this little niggling thought that it's what keeps me safe in all my comings and goings on the road. (yeah, yeah......call me strange but I've not had an accident/injury with that book in my car--ever.)

* #7 I had two series of ECT's. Yep.......that's right. No lobotomy--though I'm sure a few would have suggested it had they been asked for their humble opinion.
Sheeesh that seems like a whole lifetime ago....

* #8 I have a wonkly left leg that I have periods of being extremely self conscious about. This is the end result of falling asleep in a little green Fiat and putting it under a big yellow school bus. I won't wear short skirts or shorts because of it.

There.....
Gosh.
That wasn't too painful. LOL

If eight people care to join in--so be it!
It didn't hurt..........much.......LOL

.....another one bites the dust......

Typical 4th of July.
Start out early, wind it up late.

Floats are a whole lotta work....that's something I keep rediscovering.
Worth the effort once you get the kiddos dressed, educated on how NOT to injure small children when you gently toss candy, and seated for the drive to line-up (why is it there's ALWAYS one or three that wanna stand up when you're going down a steep hill so they can fall over and giggle at their own embarassment?!). But geeze....that's a whole lotta staples, a whole lot of ribbons and a whole lot of cardboard. And how come it takes longer to put it together than it takes to tear it apart?
Three and a half hours of assembly time. (and WEEKS of painting, costume making, props locating, etc,...)
Ten minutes to take it apart.
*shaking head*

But the float ROCKED! :-)
And no small children were actually harmed.

Himself barely made it home before they blocked off the streets for the hour long parade.
I wasn't sure he was going to make it in time.
Somehow the power source for his computer decided to assert its independence and quit talking to the rest of his 'puter.....and that became a major problem for himself.
('puter problems for himself=see Mel run!)
Some things aren't 'stick around for' worthy.......and until he decides (IF he decides) that it's just not worth his peace and serenity....my solution remains 'detaching' and reveling in my own little piece of happiness ---and getting the heck outta his way. ;-)

But all's well that ends well. And the fireworks were a good thing. We had just enough rain that the frogs were happily providing the music. And we had just enough sparklers around us (gosh kiddos are so cute with their sparklers!) that the smoke choked away the mosquitos.
We oooohhhhed and awwwwwwed our way through another round of sky sparklies.

And in a couple of weeks......it'll be the county fair.
And K.'s coming Sunday.
And the house is messy......
And the house will remain messy. LOL That's just its state of 'being'.
Bit like me. :-)

Happy Independence Day!!

My sparkler.......
Followed, or course, by their sparklies in the night sky.

MORE!! MORE!!!
(cuz if some is good.......MORE is better!) :-)
BTW.....our float ROCKED!
:-D

JUST for the record.....

I need to add one thing before I force myself to start my 'pre-night night' routine.

When I walk into my administrative meeting (which I dearly LOVE to go to....NOT!!!!!!) and I'm greeted with a chorus of "meooooww...meooowwwwwww" from a bunch of grinning and snickering schmucks.......

It's all I can do to remember to ask the Big Guy to direct my thinking, lemme assure you.
Cuz actually LETTING HIM do that.............would indeed screw with my plans to do really ROTTEN things to that beloved secretary of mine!

Oh she's in BIG trouble.
HUGE sized trouble.

Yep.
And I'm either going to go do those 'pre-night night routine' thingies I do before bed......OR....

*snickering*
Decisions, decisions, decisions!!!!

Midnight

It's midnight--
It's a bit past midnight. actually.

The tornado watch ended a few minutes ago.....
But here I sit.

If it hadn't 'felt' like a storm when I exited work, I'da done my reading, done the inventory and plopped myself in bed.
Somehow it's a bit unnerving at midnight when you can't watch out the window to see what's brewing cuz it's all dark.
And you can 'feel' it in the heaviness of the air--in the stillness of the night.....

No birdies making noise.
Not a breath of air stirring.
And the only sound of crickets chirping--is from the critter's cages.......

Ya suppose they know they're tomorrow's breakfast?

Lesson for the week

Maybe even for the year.

"You cannot please all the people, all the time. Someone will be unhappy with a decision you made."

Now, how true is that!
All I have to do is wrap my head around the lesson.....and stop focusing on the one or two 'displeased' people.

Since when have I been focused on other people's opinions?
When did THAT happen?!

*whapping self*
GET IT TOGETHER, MEL!!!!!

The deepest secret is that life is not a process of discovery, but a process of creation. You are not discovering yourself, but creating yourself anew. Seek, therefore, not to find out Who You Are, seek to determine Who You Want to Be.

Think material

You are here for a purpose. There is not a duplicate of you in the whole wide world; there never has been, there never will be. You were brought here now to fill a certain need. Take time to think that over.--Lou Austin

No other person is exactly like you or me.
No one can do exactly what we can, or touch another person in exactly the way we can.
Out of all the people who could have been created, we were chosen to be a part of this time and place.
We are needed to fulfill a plan.....

'And other duties as assigned'

I'm checking my job description to see what all is in there! I mean it.

I got to work to find my beloved secretary in the parking lot staring at her Blazer.
I figured something was wrong with the vehicle.

"Can't you hear it?"
Ummmm......it's not running?
"NO......listen........"

(Oh yeah.....I heard it. One LOUD MeeeEEEEEooooOOOowwwwWWW. Followed by another...... and another.)

Definitely a cat......you have cat in your Blazer.
"No.....yes. Some guy tossed it out from under the hood of his truck this morning when I was filling up the Blazer. And it ran right under and up."
Ah........well, it'll get hungry and exit. (apparently the cat didn't like the plan....it yowled some more) OR......I could see if I can find the cat.

"It's just a little kitten...it's really scared......."
(yeah, I so love when secretaries look sad......I think they practice this at home to manipulate their bosses)
Right. Lemme see if I can get the critter.
(she's realllllllllll good at looking sad........)

Under the truck I go, on my back....WAY under the truck...with my white shirt on, of course.
Oy...(have I ever mentioned that I don't LIKE cats?!).....and after much soft talk and 'c'mere kitty, kitty, kitty.....'-ing , I located the little kitten and coaxed it (it's now done yowling and down to mewwing) out JUST far enough for me to ease it off the ledge it was sitting and pull it down. At which point I told the beloved secretary to reach under and take the little.......kitty.

She does and I'm working my way out from half way under the truck when I hear:

"Oh. No, no, no...oh darnit...... C'mere kitty......."

And I see her feet go....and I see the little.........kitty........scampering to go back UNDER the truck (way up front where I can't intercept, of course) and back up INTO the truck.

Right.

I inched myself out from under the truck, dusted myself off and looked at the secretary who tells me:

"It clawed me. It wrapped it's feet around me and clawed me. I'm so sorry......."
Right. So you let GO of the .........kitten. (Odd.....I'm the one who doesn't particularly care for the furry......kittens and it didn't claw ME.) (she's looking sad again....and apparently thinks I'm up for a second round of scootching under the truck--this time up FRONT as opposed to down in the back..)
That's it. You're fired. You can't hold on to a wee little pathetic kitten......you're OUTTA here!
(she's REALLY, REALLY good at looking sad....)
"It's really scared. But we can leave it......"
No, no....far be it for me to unsympathetic about a really scared wee kitten!

And back under the truck I went.

Do you know the front part of a Blazer is decidedly LOWER than the back part? Yeah, well, it is. I barely inched my way under the darn truck. And the.......kitten.......is back to yowling.
And of course it's on the opposite side that I'm on.
And I hear whispering and giggling.

So I look, barely able to turn my head under that truck mindyou....and I see a pair of feet running off, slowly revealing a staff member donning (g'head and laugh if you must) a POLAROID CAMERA.

Great. JUST great.
I have a yowling ......kitten....under the truck on the opposite side of me and a photographer for a staff member, capturing the ........ummmmmmm.....moment for the whole world.

OUT from under the truck I inched and I broke it to the secretary gently.

We'll get some food and let him come on out. If he's not out in another hour, I'll call the paramedics and let them rescue the little..........kitten.
(She was all for that, for some reason.)
"Thanks for trying--I really appreciate it."
(TRYING? Hello.....we DID have the .........kitten....at one point until SOMEone let go.)
You're entirely welcome. Give it an hour with some food and then come find me.

Did the little furry.......kitten exit on it's own accord.
Nope.
Did I go BACK out to crawl under the Blazer.
You betcha.
When you have 24 kiddos reporting to you in five minute increments that the "poor scared kitty is still under the truck, Ms. Mel.....can't you HELP it?", you don't even bother to wait the hour. And for some reason that photographing staff member didn't seem to think I was serious when I kindly ASKED for the photographic evidence she'd hidden SOMEwhere....

Did history repeat itself?
Darn tootin' it did. Volunteered staff member who was SUPPOSE to hold onto the .....kitten..... and not let go--LET GO.
"I'm sorry....it scratched me!"

(please note that the........KITTEN....didn't scratch ME once and I'm the idiot who crawled under the Blazer and yanked it from it's safe haven TWICE!)

Was I smarter the second time?
Darn tootin'!
I had kiddos out there with a box and one of 'em was smarter than the grownups involved, grabbed the ......kitten.....by the scruff of the neck and plunked it inside the box!

GO kiddo!!

And as I inched my way out from underneath the truck for the final time (OH PLEASE let it never repeat itself EVER again)......I AGAIN got photographed by the resident photographing staff member who apparently has a death wish.

I'm told it'll appear in the agency newsletter.

"I think that's only fair. Then everyone will know you're not the hard-ass that they think you are."

Gee.
Thanks.....

I think. LOL

Laughter can cure a physical condition; it can and will positively affect an emotional illness as well.
Laughter ushers in a new perspective which gives vent to a changed attitude.
And our attitude toward any situation, any individual, is all-powerful.

A negative, critical attitude toward our financial situation, toward our disease, toward our boss, or spouse, or children, determines how we feel moment by moment.
In like manner, when we raise our sights, look at the world with lightness in our hearts, expecting to enjoy the day, the people, the activity, we'll succeed.

Finding humor in a situation, any situation prevents us from succumbing to feelings of powerlessness. Feeling powerless, behaving as victims, came easily for many of us.
Choosing a humorous response, opting to laugh at our situation, at any point in time, keeps our personal power where it belongs-with ourselves.

TaDa!!! Howard the Disco Duck!!

k.........see that little white duckie alllllll the way over on the right.
*checking to make sure it really IS the right....and it is.LOL*
The little white fella....

Yep.
AND he lights up in the bathtub!!
No foolin'.
Nobody gets electrocuted either!
I will warn ya that owning a Howard the Disco Duck is a bit hard on your spouse...... cuz they're the ones that get to switch the light off and on so you can play with him in the dark AND actually get a bath in.....
:-D

Shoot.........

There goes MY plan for the morning. LOL

Now answer the following questions:

What were you doing 10 years ago?
1997.....OH boy. I was dealing in the crescendoing circumstances of life with a brain tumour and out of control lyphoblastic leukemia. Not exactly the most 'fun' time in my life.
Huge learning curve--large doses of humility dished my way....I wasn't particularly 'enjoying the ride'. But I can say with clarity......it was absolutely essential in bringing me to where I am, today. And today, where I am, is utterly fantastic.

What were you doing 1 year ago?
*shrugs*
According to this place---I was here!
Wowzers!
I need to go there and do that again, SOON!

Five snacks you enjoy:
Popcorn.
Pretzels.
Popcorn.
Watermelon.

Five songs to which you know all the lyrics:
Oy geeze.......only five?!
First five off the top of my head:
And I think to myself.......What a Wonderful World.....
Unforgettable.........that's what you are.....unforgettable though near or far.....
Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high.....there's a land that I heard of once in a lullabye....
Trailer for sale or rent--room to let fifty cents.....no phone no pool no pets..I ain't got no cigarettes---ah but two hours of pushin' broom buys an 8x12 four bit room...I'm a man of means by no means.....King of the Road....
The long and winding road........that leads to your door......will never disappear....I've seen that road before....It always leads me here--leads me to your door......

Maybe ya'll are glad I'm stopping at five! LOL

Five things you would do if you were a millionaire:

I cheat. For sure at Cribbage with himself. And Monopoly. And tic-tac-toe...k.....I cheat a LOT.
I sing loud and offkey on purpose. YOU try singing songs and not hitting one note through the whole song....NOT an easy task, lemme assure you!
I feed any and all wildlife that finds it's way to our yard. (*shrugs* HIMSELF seems to think that's a bad habit..)

Five things you like doing:
Lying.
Cheating.
Stealing.
Singing loud and offkey AND feeding the wildlife in our backyard.
LOL TRUE....elsewise I wouldn't do 'em, huh?! :-)

Five things you would never wear again:

NO WAIT!! Howard the Disco Duck.
Yep.....Howard the Disco Duck!! :-)

Reading Fairy exercise alert!!

Here is an exercise.:

Today let someone give to you.
Let someone do something nice for you.
Let someone give you a compliment or tell you something good about yourself.
Let someone help you.

Then, stand there and take it.
Take it in.
You are worthy and deserving.

Do not apologize.

Do not say, "You shouldn't have."
(Do you feel guilty, afraid, ashamed, and panicky yet?)

Do not immediately try to give something back.
Just say, "Thank you."
~~~~~~~~~~
ACK!!!!!!!
.....k........I suck at 'receiving'.
Makes me.....uncomfortable.
Toys don't make me uncomfortable!
Gimme toys!
.....k.......ready, set.......(please let it be toys...LOL) GO!!!!!!
