Girl's Day Out

This is a teacup. (g'head and laugh.....) It's a teacup planter, actually. It's about a foot in diameter.
We bought one today--'we' as in *I* bought one for the girl.

We hadn't gotten a chance to do what we always do for her birthday--which is purchase outdoorsy 'springy' stuff. We've been doing that for years now--plants and gardeny stuff she can play with. We started it when she was in high school and we're still at it. It's just kinda a fun thing to do.

Today we grabbed some lunch and then went to the garden shops. We looked at all sorts of 'stuff'...fell in love with too many flowery plants that are just coming out--and ended up buying this HUGE teacup planter.
Okay, so the photo isn't accurate in colours--it's pink and yellow and purple and white. It's just too cute.
And we got some gerber daisy's to go in the teacup--and in the matching pots that'll go with the teacup. And we found a yellow planter to make it all come together for an arrangement on her patio..........or wherever...seeings she informed me today that she'd be moving.

That would be 35 more miles away--- into a small town and out of the city.
She'll be moving into a house she's renting.....WITH her boyfriend.....*squirming*

We're scheduling a monthly girl's day out cuz we can.
And I'm gonna help her figure out where to put that giant teacup once the move happens.
And I'm told I'm gonna help her paint. :-/

I love the teacup planter! It's cuter than a bug's ear!!
And I do love the girl beyond recognition.
I don't know what I'm thinkin' about this sharing a house with the boyfriend thingy.
She's not 'claimed' a boyfriend since 'Fertile Ertyl' --the dude who had 12 siblings.

This fella has one brother.
See! Even in circumstances I'm not pleased about, I can see SOME good!

Yes, I know she isn't required to have MY permission!

*squirming*

Where did I leave that duct tape?

Life is good!

"Ya know, Mel--a cat who sits on a hot stove and burns its ass doesn't spend the rest of its life resenting the stove. It lets go of the resentment but not the experience."

Ya know, in part, why life is good?
Cuz I've let go of the resentments but not the experiences.

I was looking for a resentment today--and I came up empty handed.
Wisepersoninmylife told me long ago that I had some growing to do cuz I seemed to enjoy my love affair with my resentments.
He's such a kindly fella--he told me I could keep them as long as I wanted to.
Frankly, there were those I was willing to forgive and those who could BITE ME.
When you're truly a victim of other people's 'stuff'--you can feel pretty darn 'entitled'.
My feelings of 'entitlement' left me stuck for a long, long time.

But there's something to be said for stopping in your tracks and realizing that you're genuinely glad for another human being that you used to resent.
It's a weird thing.
If you're me--you just kinda stand there and tilt your head, wondering where that hostility/anger went to, where that 'bad thinking' went.
Trust me when I say "It's weird". It's--kinda like that feeling you have when you're searching with your tongue, looking for that lost tooth the dentist yanked out.

Definitely a strange thing.
It's nothing I've not felt before. I've had a lot of resentments to wade through and surrender.

I've also been doing 'right actions' for a very long time.
How many times did wisepersoninmylife lecture me: "It's not required that you have to WANT to be kind to ACT in a kindly manner. It's not required that you have to WANT to be loving to ACT loving. And it's not required that you have to WANT to be gracious to ACT gracious. Since when does 'what you WANT to do' have anything to do with 'what you NEED to do'?!"
You can guess that I've had loads of practice in 'acting as if'.

There's been this whittling away of pride and ego going on for some time. And for me, that's what my 'wonderful' resentment had been based on.
I've found myself having that rotten, egocentric, selfish/selfcentered, it's all about MEMEME, look at what you did to poor little ol' MEMEME thinking less and less.
I've stopped hanging on to the hot stove that burnt my ass.
Today there was no 'acting as if'.
And one more time--I've discovered the freedom that comes with letting go of the resentment but not the experience.

Gotta tell ya....... It's a weird but awesomely wonderful thing to simply want good things for that person you resented for a hellaciously long time. I mean to REALLY want it for them.
It's even more awesome to go looking for and not find that darn resentment--nor the emotions that were attached to it.
And to find compassion and good will?
Blows me away!

Life IS good.
It's damn good when you just 'LET GO' and leave the results up to someone bigger than you.

*grumbling* ACK!!! *sigh*

"Consider the top three comfort foods for females: Ice cream (74%), chocolate (69%) and cookies (66%). All are sweets, and all traditionally fall into what we would consider to be snack foods. In contrast, the top three comfort foods for males were ice cream (77%), soup (73%) and pizza or pasta (72%). With the exception of ice cream, males generally claimed they received more comfort from hot foods and from main meals than did the females. The way to a man's heart appears to be through the kitchen."

Shoot!
See, I hate grocery shopping.
I mean I REALLY hate grocery shopping.
As in abhor..........detest.........
There's something about grocery stores that makes my skin crawl.
I'd rather not eat than go into one! Trust me when I say I made arrangments to do just that for a number of years.

But gosh darn--groceries need to be purchased and the only way to get past something is through it, right? I'd rather mow the lawn, thankyouverymuch!

*grumbling*

I even have grumpy ol' Maxine note pads for my grocery list....LOL
You'd think that would work for the good..... :-)

Nope!
It simply works as validation that I HATE GROCERY SHOPPING!!!!!!!!

Gawwwwwwddddd........I HATE grocery shopping!
Almost as much as I hate cooking......LOL

The fire department likes me to buy groceries.
They'd prefer the Brit do the cooking though! ROFL!!!!

*Mwaaahahahhhhhahaaaahahahahaha*

Oh boy......it's about to get 'interesting' around this house.

I've started to put up photos in the trainroom.
RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!!!!!!!! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!!!!!!!!!

Please keep in mind himself granted me 'permission' to decorate in any fashion I cared to when we started this project.
He continues to reiterate this--after giving his not so humble opinion of the decorating ideas.......none of which he's been crazy about until AFTER they've been done. LOL He's kinda like that.
Not to mention he just plain resists change! (wow......go figure THAT!)

GREAT controversy over the photos, period.
*I*.......destroyed a book. *hanging head*
Yes--it's true. I wanted cool black and white photos--I found cool black and white photos.
BIG controversy that I'd destroy a book to frame the photos......this is a 'no no'.
*snickering* I turned it into a 'yes yes'.......he'll eventually get over it.
(THIS I highly doubt....)

Colour is another controversy.
Keep in mind I framed nine of the book's photos.
I painted all of the nine frames a lovely shade of cranberry--and I matted the nine stolen photos.
Where they're being placed........yet ANOTHER controversy.

I intend them to all go on this wall.
He 'suggested' they get placed around the room.
I intend them to all go on this wall.
He still 'suggests' they get placed around the room.

Keep suggestin', dearheart! :-) I smile and nod.
Apparently it's an evil enough smile that he knows I'm hearing everything he's said........but I'm doing differently, thanksverymuch!

I'M hanging the photos. Yes, folks......yet ONE MORE controversy.

Now, keep in mind I'm a 'stick a nail in and hang the picture' kinda gal. And keep in mind he drags out the ruler, the level, some fancy-schmancy picture hangery apperatus dojobbie and measures and levels and marks and then does whatever he does before actually putting the picture on the darn nail.
It's a freaking week long process! I SWEAR!

And then there's me hanging photos......

Nail.
Wall.
Hammer.
*tap tap tap*
Voile'! Hung photo!

Three of the nine stolen, mutilated and matted book photos IN the cranberry frames ARE up.
I'll let him wrap his head around those three.

LET him think I'm done. LOLOL

*snickering*
I'm such a little terrorist!

It is clear the future holds opportunities - it also holds pitfalls. The trick will be to seize the opportunities, avoid the pitfalls, and get back home by 6:00.

It's just plain pretty out there........

It's greening up all over the place, the spring flowers are popping out and the tractors are hitting the fields.
About dang time!
;-)

I am a sick, SICK woman......*hanging head and snickering*

My boss was given his performance evaluation not too darn long ago. Hence he's now taken to doing what he dubs 'caring and sharing' time in this administrative meeting that I soooooooooo love to attend! (NOT!!!!!)
Caring and sharing?!? Oy brother....he can work on his empathy skills some other place, don'tcha think?! I'm there to do business and get back to the unit where I can play with the kiddos! I don't wanna spend my time 'caring and sharing' about 'stuff' that other folks seem to wanna go on about and do zilch to alter.
I'm a problem/solution kinda gal.

I'm gonna take something in for show and tell, though.
I'm 'caring to share' my new toy, come tomorrow! LOL

Ain't it cute? It's a zapper swatter.....designed to kill bugs without the smooshing involved of a normal swatter. It electrocutes them instead. Greatttttt invention in the right hands.
Warning warning, danger danger Will Robinson!!!..... someone thought to put it in MY hands. *snickering*

Yep.....
There's 1500 volts that works its way into the webbing...........hence the warning ON the handle to remind you NOT to touch it whilest you're pushing that little yellow button that turns on that little red light that tells you it's activated.

Someone saw it, thought of me (what's THAT tell ya.....LOL) and presented it to me as a gift. The problem is--I laughed myself silly and immediately started plotting....as I am so inclined to do.
I've had some creative mind play since I actually put the batteries in and pushed that little yellow button. *evil grin*

Of course, I HAD to touch it.
Of course it's a 'controlled shock' that it gives out.
And of course I have plans to take it for that 'sharing and caring moment' that my boss has taken to doing at the start of the administrative meeting......LOL

Tomorrow, I'm caring to share! :-)

I'm a HAPPY Bunny!

The doctor rang! The stupid doctor who takes forever to ring back cuz he's a very busy man-- RANG! Yippee!!!

And I'm a happy bunny cuz my bloodwork came back good in the places I hoped for it to BE good.
Okay, so he said I had a staph infection.....LORD knows how I got that or if it's just been laying around dormant forever and decided to rear it's ugly head....but I can 'deal'.

So I'll do a happy bunny dance and go pick up medications cuz he was nice enough to call them into the pharmacy.
YEAH!
I can be done borrowing troubles on THAT for a good six months!
*doing a happy bunny dance*

Meet Mikey!

Okay, so I think he prefers to be called "Mike". And he's camera shy so I've borrowed the photo until I can catch him unaware. I think I have a decent shot of getting that done--he likes to fill up on 'leftovers' from the feeder and can lose track of everything going on around him. LOL Bit like some people I know!

According to Kevin, our neighbour behind us, he's a pest and he lives under their shed. He claims he's as bad as a mouse and will put holes in the yard. *shrugs* As long as it's Kevin's yard.....LOL........NO problem! Even if it's ours-heck, as long as they're small holes, g'head Mike!

He's a cutie.
And he's liking that the cardinals are messy eaters cuz that means more for HIM!

He just kinda hugs the ground, sneaks over and indulges in the leftovers. That solves my worry about the backyard becoming some sunflower field....between the bunny and Seemore/Seeless, and now add Mike, I think we'll be good to go.

I kinda like the little rascal. He's wayyyy fun to watch.

Oh, and it's all my fault he's living under Kevin's shed, btw--cuz "if you didn't feed the entire wildlife........".
*shrugs*
I figure Mikey's 'good'.......he's small, he don't eat much.....
Yep, I think we'll keep him!

QOTW 4/24

Who was the last person to leave you a message?

Well, that one's easy!
It was that automated, half a tape recorded message I got, telling me to ring an 800 number and what 'representative' I should ask for. It's 'important' dontchaknow!

I rang the number cuz that was the instructions.......and I can win a free trip to Arkansas if I wanna stay at some vacation hotspot and listen to their sales pitch to convince me to purchase some land there--or some shared apartment. FREE!! *thinking*

Yeah--I passed. LOL

I think I need to visit that donotcall website and enter my number! If I do that, my message machine will be awfully lonely.......

*frowning cuz I don't get it*

So--he tells me he thinks he's depressed.
Being the caring, inquisitive sort, I ask where that was coming from.
His job, his worries about money... he THINKS.
"And......?"

His job. His worries about money... he thinks.

Frankly, I can't quite figure out where this 'worry about money' comes from. 'xactly what money is he worried about?!
I asked if he was fearful because of MY uncertainty around 'my job vs. my mission'--if some of this was coming from my lack of clarity about what I was going to do with the position the worksite is trying to get me to take.

A bit.

In my world, it either is or it isn't.
There's no 'I'm a bit pregnant'.....you either are or you're not.
I can kinda be a bit 'black and white' in my thinking, huh?

So, he's 'depressed'.
Which equals to he didn't venture outside today--'cept to wash a part of the house.....the part of the house I was washing off which he took over doing. And only a 'part' got washed-- 'cuz the other part's going to wait. NOT that I couldn't finish it--'cept he didn't want me to and opting to do that after he'd already set in his mind how it needed to happen woulda been futile and would have resulted in him finishing what he wasn't wanting to finish simply out of a need to make sure *I* wasn't doing it. (I think it had to do with keeping me from climbing a ladder--he has this THING about me climbing a ladder.......weird but true.)
It also equates to him not saying a whole heck of a lot today--about anything. No pokes in good fun about anything.
Unusually quiet, I might add.
He's just not talking.

He did tell me he needed to stop feeling sorry for himself--near 8pm he popped off with that one outta the blue.

"Ya know......you can just be sad 'cuz you're sad--there's a grave difference between self pity and sadness".
*sigh*

I'm thinkin' I shoulda just hugged him instead.

AUGHHHH!!!!!!

So, I have 'the girl'-- I love her to bits and beyond.
She has her life going and she's doing very well by herself.
I like that she's listened to me along the way--well, maybe not immediately.....but somewhere about age 18, *I* started to become 'intelligent' in her eyes. LOL What's not to like about that?!

She likes to journal and I get to visit her website from time to time (read: multiple times a day) cuz she's pretty good at keeping that journal better updated than she is at updating ME.
She posted on her journal the answers to a quiz she recently took:

"273,290 descendants-"
"you're more genetically fit than 52% of the current population"

Can you guess that my response to her journal post was:
"OMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMG!!"

AUGHHHHH!!!!!!!!!
Many moons ago she PROMISED there would be NO babies until she was closer to thirty.
She's now 25.
That's 'closer to thirty' than I'd like it to be.

It oughta be a non-issue. She ought to know by now that the RULES dictate that babies not happen until I'M ready for them to happen..........until then.........NO BABIES. She's not even married--nor is she showing great interest in that experience.
She's assuring me that marriage isn't required for babies to happen.
And she's reminding me this was something I TOLD her, once upon a time.
C'mon.........I also told her that green beans were a good source of iron...does she listen to THAT?! No. I think she has convenient recall.

I assured her that not only is 'closer to thirty' required, but so is marriage--and so is PARENTAL PERMISSION.......still...............

I'm not READY to be a grandmother.

273,290 descendants............
She told me she needs to get started SOON and have multiple sets of triplets if that's going to happen.

OMG......
NonononononononononononoNO!!
I'm going to visit her on Sunday and I'm duct taping her knees together.

Stupid Reading..........

"The goal isn't to do a successful inventory. The goal is to dig to the deepest levels of self-honesty."

I am NOT amused.
WHO tossed that line in my reading for this morning?

*sigh*

I'm being honest with myself. It's the rest of the WORLD I'm lying to!
Don't you just love THAT rationalization!

*sigh*

Ya know, opening pandora's box with a neurotic person isn't my idea of a good time. He's the one who has the barrier when it comes to talking about 'stuff' that involves my health. (I don't believe I just said that......) I don't know that there's even anything WRONG with my health. *grumbling*

Ya know, I have this high need to have everything 'figured out and put into it's place' when I present stuff. I like having myself in check before I go tossing things out there for the rest of the world to deal with. Part of me says that's just smart. Part of me says that's me trying to control reactions of the other person(s) involved. It's probably a bit of both......
It's not cool to be dishonest through omission.
"Absense of the truth is a lie."
*sigh*

Stupid reading.
Stupid book.
Stupid principled living.
Stupid doctors who take their stupid time and leave us hanging on the stupid results of stupid tests.

Yeah, yeah, yeah...........
I'm borrowing troubles and telling him just means more troubles being borrowed, emotional upheaval and CRUD to deal in.
Great truth--the omission is self serving. It gives ME less to deal with.

STUPID reading!
*sigh*
Ya know--I go through this every freaking time!
Oy.

Home to the American Red Cross

This is HIS flag. No, it's NOT the Union Jack--he's English and he prefers to fly the flag of the American Red Cross. LOLOLOL
This is MY flag. No one's going to stop at the house and ask for bandaids when that sucker's waving in the wind.

We moved to a street that proudly displays the American flag on every National Holiday. I admit, I'm a bit remiss at times and I've had to go back to put the flag out. Some days I don't know what day of the WEEK it is, let alone if it's a National Holiday.

His mother sent on the St. George's flag. I made a fatal error of asking if we were becoming a station for the Red Cross when it arrived.
St. George's day will arrive on the 23rd. Last year we missed it only cuz the English person in this household who SHALL remain anonymous failed to KNOW what day St. George's Day was. *rolling eyes*

I reminded him yesterday.
WHAT WAS I THINKING!?!!

Out he traipses with his little St. George's flag and down comes the good ol' stars and stripes.

I about had a heart attack.
I thought he was going to let it touch the ground--and then he went to fold it in half..the WRONG WAY.
OH Lord.....LOL WRONG! Wrongwrongwrong!

Needless to say, I folded the flag.

His is flapping in the breeze this morning.........bit early, but I think he's trying to desensitize the neighborhood to the American Red Cross flag in our front yard.

He called me a 'tosh'.

I've added bandaids to the shopping list.
;-)

Cool neighbor lady/Cool STUFF!!

So I have this closet in the spare bedroom. It's where I stuff 'stuff' that I collect throughout the year, grabbing whatever I see that makes me think of the girl, the other girl, the Brit--folks who mean something to me. I'm forever picking things up.
I can't help it.......LOL I'm a 'stuff' grabber!

That closet also gets to hold all the seasonal clothes--ones that get changed back and forth. I was cleaning out the closet and bringing out the spring clothing. About darn time! I'm sooooo ready for spring.

Ya know, half the time I forget the treasures I've found and the 'stuff' sits in that poor overstuffed closet waiting for some holiday, some celebration--then I'm rooting through the overstuffed closet filled with 'stuff' to find whatever 'stuff' I've accumlated so I can happily have an excuse to dole it out. (like I NEED some excuse? LOL)

Some times I don't wait for an occasion and I just FEEL like wrapping up a pressie and handing it out.

I will say--It's great for the holidays. I haven't had to go 'holiday' shopping during the season for pressies forever. (suits me, I dislike shopping and CRINGE at the thought of having to actually enter a retail establishment during the actual holiday season)

But oh yeahhhh...........

I found STUFF in the overstuffed 'stuff' closet! COOL stuff.
Okay, so I found it cuz the silly clothes bar fell down and made a mess and I had to pull all this 'stuff' out so I could get to the problem to fix it......AND all the clothes that were in transit/being traded out had to go, too.

BUT--I found VERY cool STUFF!!
Like a HUGE bubble maker or three. Okay, that's not "OR" three--that would be "I found THREE HUGE bubble makers!" *doing happy dance*

TOYS!!!!!!!
Yeah, yeah.....well, I musta bought three for a reason, don't ya think?!
:-)

Soooooooooo.........Guess who made bubbles tonight after a day FILLED with team business and talking 'shop' and dealing with Judges, social workers and attorneys?!
Yep--that would be ME!

*doing happy dance*
Ain't nothing like a HUGE bubble floating across the lawn into the street to get the attention of the three little girls who moved in across the street late last fall.

Did ya know I was a 'cool neighbor lady'?

I am a cool neighbor lady!
*polishing nails*

Yep.........I'm cool....wayyyyyyyyyyyy cool!
:-)

*sigh*
Now--'what to do' with all the clothes that are piled on the bed, all over the floor and in the hallway...........................in BOTH the bedrooms...........and all that other 'stuff' that needs to go BACK into the overstuffed 'stuff' closet.......................

Leave it and go make more bubbles!!!!!!!!!
Woooooooooooohoooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
*chuckling*
I'm soooooooooooooooooooooooooo naughty.
But I'm soooooooooo cool! LOLOL

"Closed" and Waiting

Sometimes I'm a pretty closed person, still.
How's that for 'truth'?

People still don't have the 'big picture' of this life that's been on loan to me. I don't consider it 'MY life'. I'm real clear, given my experiences, that it's just on loan. I like remembering this. It keeps me more than grateful for what I get to have today.

March has passed and it's now in to April. I was overdue for bloodwork that I still get to participate in.
I'm down to six month checks! THIS is awesome and something to celebrate.
I've now managed years of remission from the leukemia and I've been graced to be breast cancer free for longer. *tossing confetti and releasing balloons!!*
I spent eight years doing the battle from breast cancer to leukemia to brain tumor.
I can't say it was the most 'fun' experience.
Most times I'm not real conscious of any cancer being a fact of my existence. I blame 'living in the moment' for that one. It took me a whole lot of lessons to get the importance of staying in the 'now'.

The Brit still lives with this huge knowledge of cancer still lurking. It's probably bigger for him simply because he's never had to actively live it. I was just ending up treatments and surgery for the brain tumor when he stumbled into my life. He prefers not to talk about it. I prefer not to talk TO him a whole lot about it--he tends to be MORE than a bit neurotic and can get..........well, 'worked up' might be a good way to say it. Heck, I can't get some plain ol' headache without the man starting to fret. Small wonder he has ulcers!

I did manage to show up for my bloodtests.
Okay, true to my nature I missed the first appointment to get the testing done and was late for the rescheduled appointment. And it went from a simple blooddraw to seeing the oncologist who STILL insists on watching me like a hawk and won't let some M.D. treat me, even for bronchitus forgoodnesssakes! He's a protective soul--I think he ought NEVER meet the Brit!

So I did the testing and now I wait.
I suck at waiting.
And while I have no 'reason' to fret about what the tests will say--the very act of getting to see the oncologist AND do the bloodwork was enough to send my brain into overdrive--when I allow myself time TO think.
"Closed me" hasn't mentioned it--cuz really, we don't tend to talk this stuff. It's either denial on his part or it's JUST too scary for him. I'm pretty convinced it's a high need to maintain order and 'control' on my part.
Maybe there's a part that remains frightening to me?

Huh.
Weird that it would FEEL like I have more to lose today.........
*sigh*

ANYtime now they can ring me and tell me 'all's clear!'.......
*sigh*

QOTW 4/17

Talk about one of the most uncomfortable moments you can remember.....

Oy boy....I'd prefer not to. *sigh* I still feel the humility that was involved.

Ready. Set....... GO!!

I'm a prideful woman--a pretty private person. If it's not required for work, it has no place at work. If I can manage the circumstances so they won't affect work, that remains private and ought not to be brought into the work place.

And I'm a control freak.
This is self confessed over and over and over again.
I don't like feeling out of control--even if I recognize I am NOT in control of the whole ball of wax.

I failed to tell people at the worksite that I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I failed to let them have any knowledge of there even being a medical concern in my life. I informed my immediate supervisor. But I'm not at the worksite to talk about MY stuff, I'm there to help others wade through theirs. I saw no reason to let that simple fact of my existence enter into to the work place.
I also had a pretty clear idea of what I was willing to let people be a part of and what I wasn't willing to let people be a part of.
My cancer diagnosis was not something they needed to worry about or be a part of. Yank it out and move on forgoodnesssakes!

True to my theory in life, I opted a number of times to have the lesser treatment. Give me choices and I'm notorious for choosing the 'easier, softer way'. Multiple times I'd miss work under some 'guise' so as not to tell people the truth and risk that 'stuff' entering into the worksite. They yanked it out and I moved on. That was my plan and it was working brilliantly.

'Separation of church and state' is great in theory.
And I darn near pulled it off....until it became whittled away for me and the clarity arrived.
"The lesser of two evils is STILL evil."
It's a lesson I oft times repeat to myself OUT LOUD so I don't forget it and have to repeat it!

My simple removal of the lumps had complicated the circumstances and on round five the answer was no longer simple, no longer 'coverable'/'hideable'....the simple fact was I was going to have a part of my body cut off. Bit 'bigger' than a simple 'hook and yank'..

You'd have thought that would have been 'enough' to tell my coworkers the truth.

Exit Mel for surgery--enter Mel wrapped up in a sling with tubes galore.
And my answer--"Bungee jumping.....don't ask......"
No fooling......
Believe it or not, I'd done such a stand-up job of it, that folks were pretty clear that A) This was NOT about bungee jumping and B) no one was going to dare ASK what it was about.

And, because I was notorious for hearing only parts of what physicians had to tell me and tuning out the rest, when they talked with me about starting the chemotherapy as a follow up to the surgery I near wanted to choke the oncologist.....fact is, I tried to 'fire' him.
I waited on actually doing the chemotherapy because I was looking for a way to keep THAT out of other's information banks....and I waited long enough that the cancer had moved into the liver and bones.
I couldn't figure it out fast enough. People were going to SEE there was a problem.
I mean, what was I going to do--tell them I'd joined a sect of the hari krishna's? That thought did enter my head, btw.

My boss suggested the simple truth many, many times earlier.
I was hellbent on keeping that information out of the worksite, out of the hands of people who I knew would start treating me differently, away from the knowledge of the children and families I worked with who had enough of their own issues to wade through....what right did I have to open up the topic for all the folks whose lives I touched?
And who wanted to be THAT out of control to have people asking and caring and wondering and praying for you?
Not me.

One of the more uncomfortable, humbling moments of my lifetime was gathering the staff together to talk with them about the number of lies I'd told them to cover up the truth that I didn't want them knowing....with my boss (who I admired and respected and considered a good friend) watching and letting me do the right, though painful thing.

The staff had a couple hours to wrap their head around it, to talk through their own fears and anger at being lied to for months. They talked about the degree of intimidation (real or imagined)that they'd 'obeyed'. They shared their own anger, mostly at themselves for having known something was awry and blaming themselves for not creating an open door for me. And they cried with their own sad admission that they'd failed to 'push the envelope'-- failed to demand answers when I'd 'cared enough' to push to get answers about their lives.

And then I got to talk with the kiddos I worked with....whom I'd lied to as well---the ones I'd preached 'honesty' to.....the whole while lying to them all.
I asked forgiveness.
I got it--kids are like that.

One of the most uncomfortable moments I've gotten to wade through.
Self created, or course..... I had options and failed to execute them. I failed to let people walk through those moments with me.
I cheated them......and I cheated me.
I still wear the humility for those choices.

They walked through the chemotherapy with me....got the heck out of the way when I needed the bathroom much worse than any of them did.
They gave me funny hats to wear and a couple ran from the worksite when I rang perplexed as to what I needed to do because the hair was coming out when I combed my hair....in huge chunks noless.
They even offered to 'spray shellac' it in place until WE figured out a solution.
Not THE most viable solution--but I couldn't come up with ANY solution so it was a blessing even if it sounded way out there.

See.....I forgot the power of the 'we'.

WE can do a LOT.
WE can walk through some mighty tough storms.

It's a lesson I hope I don't ever, ever, EVER forget.

Cuz we really can do, TOGETHER, what I can't do all by my little lonesome.
WE are powerful and the WE is awe-some.

Note to myself: NEVER FORGET THIS!

Tellin' On Myself.......

Okay....so last night I opted to do what any 'child' does with their goody basket---dump it out and take stock of exactly what's IN there. :-) (yeah, yeah....I'm a bit childlike a bit too often! LOL)

The Brit apologized when he saw that foil wrapped chicken.

Ha--I peeled off the foil and popped that sucker in my mouth....with him watching wide-eyed. LOL

*shrugs*
Okay--so I don't LIKE chocolate.
And I make a fuss about eating chocolate bunnies....
But I got to live the horror of gathering eggs from a hen-house many, many moons ago.

I concluded longggggggggggggggggggggggggg ago that chickens 'deserve to die'.

:-D

Free the Chocolate Bunnies!!!!!!!

Hippity hoppity...... I got a bunny day basket from himself! I'll note that it is 100% bunny free, thankyouverymuch! Cute little thing--it's a chocolate basket filled with more chocolates. Now, mind you, I don't do chocolate. LOL But I especially don't do chocolate bunnies. If I DID chocolate I wouldn't do chocolate bunnies. Nope, I won't do it.

There's something about the thought of eating the easter bunny that's disturbing to me. And that's ANY part of the bunny. Nope, won't do it. Himself knows this about me and had the basket specially filled without a chocolate (or any other type of confection)bunny.

Yes, I know I'm quirky.
I know it. He knows it.
And now the clerk in the chocolate store knows it. LOL

Again?! *sigh*

Just the facts, ma'am. (based on 25 years of data)

Average number of tornadoes in a year.............................................46
Greatest number of tornadoes in a year...............................103 in 2001
Smallest number of tornadoes in a year................................18 in 1996
Average number of days with tornadoes...........................................16

Frankly, I'd like it better if we'd be doing this crud at five in the evening as opposed to 11:30 at night!
*sigh*
It's gonna be a long night.....or short, depending how you look at it.....

Was that five or six?

It might have started out looking 'pretty'........
The official count was five, perhaps six tornados within 45 minutes time.

One would have been MORE than sufficient for me.
I can't say I'm keen on tornados.

I can't decide if I'm glad I was at the worksite or not..... But when you suddenly find yourself in 'charge' of 23 students and nine staff members you somehow make yourself deal with other's safety and worry about the rest later. G-d help me that I couldn't have settled for that--there were other folks in the building cuz we're not the sole occupants. Honestly--those folks didn't have a clue what was happening, where to go, or what to do.

I cannot, for the life of me, understand how an employer can NOT teach their employees what to do to stay safe in moments like last evening.

It was close enough for me.
I'll pass on having a replay of that.

It did start out pretty, though!
But boy ......did it get ugly......

Graced again........

My boss had a heart attack about four months ago. That was a tough moment. I'd lost a boss a few years earlier to a heart attack. Absolutely noone wants to do a repeat of that.
I'm not even going to mention that I LIKE my boss.
I mean I genuinely LIKE the man. (did I say I wasn't going to mention that?)
I also had a deep abiding respect for my earlier boss.
I had a whole lot of admiration and genuine care for the man.
I miss Jim..........he was a great boss and just a GOOD man...period.

I have some great conversations with Keith. He's pretty awesome. I like that we can share things on a professional level and on a spiritual level--he can challenge the by-jeepers out of me and I can do likewise.....I don't buy his B.S., he doesn't buy mine.
I've come to rely on 'those kind' of people being in my life.
I don't need people buying my B.S.
I'd had Keith for a boss for three years earlier during my career with this agency. His responsibilities got shifted and he got reassigned---I then had Jim for my supervisor.
When Jim died I was asked who I wanted to be my supervisor.
Honestly, who were they going to give me--I'm a tough one to win over, professionally.

I asked for Keith....if he would have me.
I'm not an easy one to 'manage' some moments.
Respect, professional and personal, has to exist for me for some reason.
I respect the man greatly.

I don't think I got a sense of how Keith viewed my relationship with him until this week.
I knew he respected me and valued my opinion, my mission and my passion around that mission. I knew he respected where I came from and how I got to where I am, today.

I didn't know how much he simply valued my friendship and my relationship with him as a human being.

I sat in a room with the 'leadership' of the agency and only two people knew the man was looking at a test for a faulty heart valve they'd discovered after doing a recent test.
I know why the other person who had the information was given it.
I was humbled when I discovered I was the only other person in the room who knew what he was looking at possibly getting to do.

Humbled is a good word for it.
No sense of self importance....not one smidgeon of smug 'aren't *I* special!'....
Just a deep sense of humility for having somehow been graced with the man's respect and trust that he'd want to share that truth with me.....
ME.

It's gotta be a G-d thing.
I'm just not that damn good............

Late-Nite Storm........

Yes sir, ladies and gents--we have fireworks going.

And yes, I know......bad plan to be on a computer when there's lightening strikes happening around you.
But wow-- I get home near 11p.m., sit myself down with a glass of water to catch up on what I missed during the course of the workday, open up a window cuz it's just plain NICE outside and it's been so darn long since I've had opened windows.... I could hear it coming in the darkness. Not only did we have the rumbling of thunder in the quiet of the night, but I could hear the sound of the rain and wind approaching before it hit. You could hear it rushing towards you. Kinda like a wave crashing to the beach.......
What an awesome sound--even if it was a bit eerie.

Okay, okay.......more lightening and thunder. ACK!!
I'm thinkin' that my cue to get OFF this contraption, huh? :-P

*sigh* Old People Stuff

So I used to poke fun at my step-mother for feeding the birds when I was growing up. Not only was she setting the poor birds up for dependence on human intervention by feeding them year 'round, she was depriving them of their nutrients--why would they bother to eat bugs and worms and the stuff they really needed if some idiot was catering to them, day in day out.
It was an ongoing war--merely because I could see NO value whatsoever in purchasing food for birds when they had a whole world full of food availed to them.
And she was changing their whole migration pattern, as well!
It's not NICE to fool around with Mother Nature, you know!
Let's not forget that my father fed squirrels peanut butter sandwiches and that the two of them could sit for HOURS in their lawnchairs watching the critters scamper around and flitter about.
What was THAT all about?!

Yeah well.....I shudder to admit that I've become one of 'those' people.
I've done my research, though!
I'm not affecting whole migration patterns.
I'm not ripping the birdies off of their vital nutrients.
I'm not keeping them in the frozen tundra and causing their deaths.

I am buying birdseed like crazy. And peanuts. And corn. And sunflower/saffron/thistle seeds.....
I'm NOT making peanut butter sandwiches! (please note that!)
I am naming them and giving them personalities.
And I do greet them by name.....

OMG....I AM one of "THOSE" people!
He is, too! He is, TOO!!
(that's my only defense.....LOL....)

Littlekite

So the Brit got home from work and didn't have to work hard to pry me away from the computer where I was running budget crud. We went to the baseball field to have a moment with the kites.
It's a pretty cool place. Homeruns have been known to go into the pond and apparently the geese paddling around can get mildly irritated when they're distubed. But they have their own private view of kite fliers from that pond, so it's not all bad.
I have a little kite. And because I name inanimate objects...I call him Littlekite. (horribly creative of me, huh?! ;-) ) Littlekite folds up into his own pocket and can travel just about anywhere he darn well pleases--not to mention he's really simple to get up (which is required cuz I'm not that accomplished of a kite flyer). I'm out there to have a bit of play time--not getting a kite up is NOT fun! Littlekite goes up, up, UP really really well.
Himself, on the other hand, has a big kite. Go figure- I call him Bigkite. :-P You can't tell it from the photo, but it's near six feet across and it's got a tail that goes on forever. Poor Littlekite might pale in comparison when it comes to size--but he really does goes up, up, up! So does Bigkite--but Bigkite would like to pull your arm off when he goes wayyyy up there. I need both arms. I'm sticking with Littlekite.
And true to a kite's nature---Littlekite goes loop-dee-loop and downnnnnnnn when that wind decides it's done for the day. That's one of the good things about kite flying. It can be decided when you're done. No matter how hard you tug that sucker, no matter how much you beg and plea with Littlekite to go up, up, UP....as much as Littlekite might wanna please you, Littlekite's reliant on something bigger than YOU to make him soar. My hand's only holding the string. Ain't that the truth for all of us.......
And he might look like a mess when he's done soaring....but he packs up neat and easy. And he'll soar again.....when it's time. And once again, I'll just be the hand holding that string.
It'll be my pleasure to watch what something BIGGER than me can make do for Littlekite.

I bet Littlekite doesn't ask 'what do you want from me' and is really clear on what's wanted for him......cuz he soars SO well.................

QOTW 4/10

Do you dread certain times/responsibilities of your day?

I'd like to say it's dependent on my mood. LOL And then I'd blame being "of that age" where my mood shifts back and forth and up and down a LOT. (pity the poor Brit!)
The number ONE thing I 'dread' during the course of the day------ going 'nite-nite'. It's a battle to get me there.
Gosh, I sound like a three year old. *snickering* I don't like ending a day----period.

There's some responsibilities at the worksite (like the budget) and some situational responsibilities (like hiring and dismissing) that I can't say I'm real fond of. Heck, I don't balance my checkbook. *chuckling* Given that fact, handing me a multimillion dollar budget to be responsible for makes little sense! I dread the times I'm stuck in some office trying to get numbers to balance and work--it's time I could be spending playing with the kiddos I work with....and that's way more fun!
And I dread having to do all that paperwork that comes with new hires. Ughhhh....

I can get it all done simply by remembering that the responsibilities come before the priviledges.
'Cept when it comes time to go 'nite-nite'.

Or when it comes to eating meats... *shudder*
Gosh, I just realized I dread mealtimes! LOL
Gimme an all nighter snack fest and NO responsibilities!!!
Dream on, eh? LOL

It's STUCK!!!!

I would have given you all of my heart
but there's someone who's torn it apart
and she's taking almost all that I've got
but if you want, I'll try to love again
baby I'll try to love again but I know

The first cut is the deepest, baby I know
The first cut is the deepest
'cause when it comes to being lucky she's cursed
when it comes to lovin' me she's worst
but when it comes to being loved she's first
that's how I know

The first cut is the deepest, baby I know
The first cut is the deepest

I still want you by my side
just to help me dry the tears that I've cried
cause I'm sure gonna give you a try
and if you want, I'll try to love again
but baby, I'll try to love again, but I know

The first cut is the deepest, baby I know
The first cut is the deepest
'Cause when it comes to being lucky she's cursed
when it comes to lovin' me she's worst
but when it comes to being loved she's first that's how I know
The first cut is the deepest, baby I know

The first cut is the deepest

YES I KNOW Rod Stewart sang the darn song.
Cat Stevens wrote and recorded it (this was an battle fought with himself who thought himself RIGHT)......and got it stuck in my head, dangit.
It started this morning bright and early for NO apparent reason.
*sigh*
I'm gonna take this one to bed with me and G-d help me if I wake up in the morning singing the same dang song!

Saved by an adventure!

It was good to go on an adventure this morning. The Brit opted to suck it up--okay, probably a bad term with congestion going on, huh--and we went out for breakfast. It's a thing we do. If nothing else, it gets us out of the house? And this is smalltown Iowa--we have GREAT breakfasts.
Face it, if we'd have stayed in I KNOW what I'd have been doing.......and it wouldn't have included fresh air despite the sun shiney day we had going.
We stopped at a park where we discovered they'd put in a new bridge! Actually, it's a replica of the old bridge and it's pretty cool! No biggie that there's no bottom to it yet and no road leading to it! It's probably good that the latter doesn't exist--folks like me would be excited to be going onto the new bridge and end up in the river.

The trees are budding and I'm gladder than glad. He's not--allergies on top of viral crud equals one cranky Brit. But we saw eagles and mud cranes (he says 'herons', I still say mud cranes), tree creepers and all sorts of funs stuff. The mud cranes were gathering sticks for their nests. I was too busy watching to catch a shot...besides, it's not nice to photograph pregnant anythings.
And we ended up stopping at a new store along the way.......only cuz they had these giant urns outside the building. NOT that there's much call for giant urns (upwards to five feet) in Iowa. I'm not sure who'd have the darn things in their house (and that's what they display them for the gal tells us) or in their yard--but there's hundreds of them. HUNDREDS! I'm still trying to figure that one out. What would anyone wanna five foot giant urn?

*shrugs*
They had six foot iron fountains, too.

I thought we could use one of those on the patio for the birdies to bathe in. At a mere $1300 dollars we'd have the fanciest birdie bath in town, dontcha think?
Iron and water sounds like a bad plan to me, but I do believe the birdies would think we were all that and a bag of chips.
We didn't buy a fountain or a giant urn.
Nor did we buy an awesome weather vane with a bunny on it.
Alas and alack, we left empty handed.
I'm gonna work on him for that six foot fountain though.....

Taming the Giant Rabid Squirrel?

Okay--so it's been a stressful week.
WHY, after thirty years of sober living, is that first thought "I need a drink!"? LOL Seriously--ought that not be changed by now?!

No, no stiff one for Mel. Not even after a host of 'ick' that would make you want to vomit.

Nope--bring on the plasticine!

I'm sure it's no surprise that I couldn't bring myself to destroy the giant rabid squirrel. I've taken to snatching him up, waving him at the Brit and making that 'WAHHHRRRR' sound. It's enhanced our communication a thousand fold! (okay, maybe not REALLY--but I do like making that sound and I do like threatening him with an attack by the giant rabid squirrel!)

So-- tonight it was the magic flowers with powers to sooth the giant rabid squirrel. *nodding*
One would think it would be 'safer' and less harmful than drinking. That might be up for discussion at some point.

But I did offered the powers of the magic flowers to the Brit who's doing some viral 'crud' that's got him coughing and sneezing and shaking my hand before retiring to bed. (not with the same hand, of course-- I'm wisened enough to pay attention.) He seemed to think I should save the powers for the squirrel who attacks him on a regular basis.

Wasn't that kind?!
I'm almost sure there's no self serving plot to get me to stop chasing him around the kitchen with the giant rabid squirrel, making that 'WAAHHRRRR' noise involved in that gracious and sacrificial act.

Ahh...but LITTLE does he know those cute little flowers possess evil powers!

Mwwaaahhhhhhhahahahaha!!
:-)

I just KNOW I'm gonna end up grounded from the plasticine.....

ASK me!

I don't like when my integrity gets challenged. I've decided that.
First reaction, straight out of the gate -- defensiveness. Claws come out, I can feel myself flush with the 'oh BOY am I getting angry', and I'm doing all I can do to say what's 'true' in the most 'necessary and kind' manner I can muster up. I'd make a horrid politician--I can still be internally reactive though I'm pretty good at 'restraint of pen and tongue'.

I got a chance to say what was 'necessary, kind and true', in the kindest way that I could. I also got an opportunity to go back and admit to the person I was defensive and that I GET defensive when it's about my integrity. If I lie, I'm the first to come back and tell the truth. My 'omissions of truth' aren't something most folks bother to come back to tell the truth about. I, however, am pretty disciplined in giving that part--only cuz I've had to practice it over and over and over again. I'll omit the truth if it's about keeping confidence ONLY if that's the 'right' thing to do. I know the difference between keeping confidences and keeping secrets.

Yesterday I was part of an 'investigative interview'. Questions got asked of me--but they failed to ask the question ABOUT me TO me. Had they asked, I would have given an honest answer. Because they didn't ask, I wasn't given an opportunity TO be honest...which disturbs me. I can assume I wasn't asked because I have a degree of credibility with the interviewer. I'm concerned it wasn't asked TO me because they didn't anticipate I'd answer honestly.

Talk TO me not about me.
Ask.
Don't assume I'm not credible or that I'm so INcredible that I'd never make a professional error.

Great.
JUST great.
*sigh*

It's not always 'fun'..

NOone likes having to terminate an employee.
Not me, not the two leadership people who work directly with me.
We're all pretty personally invested in each other.
Team's are pretty tight and they work well together.
So when you end up in a position of having to let an employee go, it's not a fun thing. It's never 'fun'. And then there's the 'backlash' from the decision--even when it's 200% right....even when you've had a working relationship with the rest of the folks for YEARS....even when the other employees KNOW it was a good decision based on their OWN concerns.... Suddenly they're a bit paranoid that they, too, could be terminated. *sigh* Everybody gets squeemish. Heck, termination makes ME squeemish.

And then there's the 'junk' of the angry ex-employee that you get to answer to. Worse yet, when they involve administration and you get to answer to them about accusations made. Good practice, good accountability. Come talk to the kids and the staff if you like, look in places you'd like to look. If someone made an accusation about a team member, I'd go looking too. That's the responsible thing to do. Turning a blind eye would be a bad plan, whether the source is credible or not.

It just FEELS crappy.
Like you're not trusted.
Like you've done something horribly wrong.

I know afterwards, it'll be validation of doing the right things. At worst, it'll give us something to do 'better'.
I also know at this moment, it feels crappy enough to have had to terminate someone, period. Toss in the rest of the 'stuff'-- ick........just ICK.........
*sigh*
Some days are easier than others, eh?

Go fly a kite!

When you've had a day chalked full of 'those' kind of moments-- the ONLY answer is "go fly a kite"!

So that's what we did when himself got home. He whined and whinged and carried on about how windy it was.....how cold it was....how tired he was.....and hewasn't even gonna GET the big kite out (we're talking 6 feet of kite without a tail.....goodness knows how long with the tail!). Just the pocket kite, mind you. It's a cool kite. It folds up into its own little pocket and that little kite just soars its little heart out!

But he surrendered---mostly cuz I whinged and whined louder and longer. LOL

And we flew kites!
I'm feeling much better, thanks!
So much better that I can make note that I spent the entire day dating my 'stuff' 4/4...LOL I even rang the worksite to have them change the date on a few things that NEEDED to be altered elsewise it would mean some serious problems.
That musta been the kite flying at work......I'm such a dweebishly prideful person, I'da snuck in and made the changes in hopes to not have them noticed! LOL

I oughta drag himself out more often to fly kites.
It's good for my ego...LOL And however that works, it's just plain good for the soul.

QOTW 4/4

Would you rather be with someone for the wrong reason or alone for the right reason?

I've had the opportunity to do both. And Ohhhh what fun! *rolling eyes* I gleened a whole lot of lessons in both circumstances. The lessons were equally hard learned. LOL I'm a "two by four" learner, also lovingly known as "an experiential learner". (it just sounds nicer, it's STILL painful)

Alone for the right reasons would be my preference. Mostly because it limits who's being affected in the long run....or so I'd like to think. But frankly, even in the 'alone for the right reason' people were still being affected. I'd like to believe that the lessons learned in my 'aloneness' were ones that weren't shrouded and confused by all the 'relationship' garble.

Is it the weekend yet?

The Brit seems to think I've done something 'bad' to my knee. It's got a lovely bruise all the way around it but only hurts in one spot where it's not bruised. With my luck I've fractured it. I just know that I've been pretty selective about what clothing I put on from the waist down. It would seem that even fabric touching that one spot brings pain. *sigh* Stupid stairs! Okay...LOL Stupid ME!

And I'm weary. Tired and weary.
It's been a busy weekend.
We have family events on the unit. Frankly, the agency started it years ago when their focus was 'family based'. They've since moved away scheduling family events--it would seem the kiddos they serve acted out more with them. I'm not sure how they were 'using' the events--we've focused on just making it a time to spend structured in 'play' with your kiddo. We've opted to keep the family events. And yes, we get acting out before and after--sometimes during the event. What do folks expect? We have kiddos with families who have problems like the rest of the world. We also have kiddos with no families, or with families whose rights have been terminated. We work with tough kids who have been through tough circumstances. Don't call my kiddos 'bottom enders'........pisses me off if you do. LOL I'm rather fond of them, thanksverymuch.

It really has been a long weekend, what little I've seen of it. 43 hours in three days.....small wonder I'm tired. But it's a good tired. And the family event went very well--I got to play with several kiddos and their families.
No, I didn't win a cake in the cake-walk. I even cheated and STILL didn't win!

But I DID get my cupcakes made, dangit!
I'd been trying since Friday afternoon to get the darn things made.
Nevermind that I left the batter sitting ON the counter Saturday morning and ran home after a chaotic moment at work passed to bake and frost 'em--after the family event had started! They got done AND they got won!
I'm sure it woulda made more sense to run to the store, huh?

Wow.
It's Sunday already.
This IS the weekend....
*putting head on desk*
I'm tired.....
