Figaro for a night

Happy Halloween.....Trick or Treat!!!

Being Ducks

Fairy Wisdom for the Day

Don't overlook the wonder of the ordinary.

The extraordinary, the amazing, the phenomenon are daily glorified in the movies, the news, and on television. Our senses become bombarded. We become addicted to drama. The only things that get our attention are the big, catastrophic, knee-jerking events.

Take a closer look at your life, your everyday world, and the people and activities in it. If it were all taken from you in one moment, what would you miss? What sights, what sounds, what smells? Would you miss the view from your kitchen window? If you were never to see that scene again, would you nostalgically reminisce about it, wishing you could see it one more time, remembering how beautiful it was, and how much that familiar sight comforted you in your daily life?

What about those toys strewn about or the baby crying because he's hungry or wet? What about the sounds of the city you live in as it comes to life each morning? Or how about how your child smells after her bath? Or when she comes in cold from playing in the snow?

What about the way your friend smiles, or that little thing he says all the time that's not funny but he thinks it is, so you laugh?

Look closely at the ordinary in your life. While you're being grateful, don't forget to express pure, sheer gratitude for how beautiful the ordinary really is. We can easily overlook the ordinary, take it for granted. The sun rises and sets, the seasons come and go, and we forget how beautiful and sensational the familiar really is.

Fairy Reminder

"If onlys" are lonely.
--Morgan Jennings

The circumstances of our lives seldom live up to our expectations or desires. However, in each circumstance we are offered an opportunity for growth or change, a chance for greater understanding of life's heights and pitfalls. Each time we choose to lament what isn't, we close the door on the invitation to a better existence.

We simply don't know just what's best for us. Our vision is limited. Less so today than yesterday, but limited still. The experiences we are offered will fail to satisfy our expectations because we expect so much less than God has planned for us in the days ahead.

We get what we need in the way of relationships, adventures, joys and sorrows, today and every day. Celebrating what we get and knowing there is good in it eases whatever trial we are undergoing. We are cared for, right now. We need not lament what we think we need. We do have what we need. We will always get what we need, when we need it.

I will breathe deeply and relax. At this moment my every need is being attended to.

On the Melt

QOTW

What was the last 'gift' you received and what was the occasion?

I'll take this as literal--a tangible prezzie that was handed over to me.  (Cuz frankly, I'm gifted with all sorts of cool stuff every day!)

The last prezzie of the 'wrapped and came with a card' type--was a really cool  thingy to put inside of a pumpkin.  Noise activated, the lights come on and change colours--and it's got a multitude of  greetings that it belts out!  There's lightening strikes even--and there's even a spooky-song!

It's wayyyyyyyy cool.

We already stuck it inside of a jack-o-lanterny thing and tested it out!  Works pretty slick!

*nodding*  It's going on the railing of the porch so when the kiddlings show up for trick or treat, they can be properly greeted!  :-)

That's IF I don't wear the batteries down....
......mighta felt the need to test it out on more than one occasion.......

(***note to self:  BUY MORE AAA batteries!!)

Oh--and it was a prezzie for "Bosses' Day".  :-D

I think it's fair to say that the folks who work with me know I sorta-kinda like Halloween.

Today's Reading

We are each gifted in a unique and important way. It is our privilege and adventure to discover our own special light.
-- Mary Dunbar

All of us are gifted. Every person has a gift that can bring great joy and light to those who encounter it. Our task is to stand in the sun and create a climate that will develop and nurture our gift.

Sometimes we are afraid to let ourselves believe we have anything special to offer or contribute to the world. We think of ourselves as plain and untalented, with no gifts or special potential. But if we believe we are limited, we act in a limited way. We take few risks and follow few paths that might develop our special talents and gifts.

Today we are learning to love ourselves and trust ourselves in a whole new way. Now anything is possible. To fully believe in our talents, we need only step from the darkness into the sun. We will take this first step, trust enough, and start believing that, yes, we do have special gifts.

Today let me be aware of my deep and unfilled desires, dreams, and wishes, which is the first step on the way to accepting my gifts.

Sleeping with Bread

During the bombing raids of WWII, thousands of children were orphaned and left to starve. The fortunate ones were rescued and placed in refugee camps where they received food and good care. But many of these children who had lost so much could not sleep at night. They feared waking up to find themselves once again homeless and without food. Nothing seemed to reassure them. Finally, someone hit upon the idea of giving each child a piece of bread to hold at bedtime. Holding their bread, these children could finally sleep in peace. All through the night the bread reminded them, "Today I ate and I will eat again tomorrow." (Linn, Dennis et al, Sleeping With Bread, p.l)

These are the beginning words of a book that introduces us to a practice called the examen. The orphans held on to what nourished them and were thus able to sleep peacefully at night. The examen, based on the spiritual exercises of St. Ignatius, helps a person hold onto what spiritually nourishes him by looking at what is giving him consolation in his life or causing him desolation. It allows someone to express his gratitude to God for the good stuff and turn to him for solace for the bad stuff. It is quite simple. You simply ask yourself, in the last day/week/month what gave me consolation and what caused me desolation.

Things to hold on to:

....the goodness of people around me who TRY and keep trying--who persevere even when it would be perfectly 'logical' to toss in the towel and use the excuse "I tried...."

....the creative, playful nature that seems to lay in wait for the perfect opportunity to jump out and add to the waning enthusiasm JUST at the right moment. I'm sure glad G-d made me playful!

....the giving nature of folks who seem to surface when they're needed.  Implicit timing on His part, I'm sure.  But I seem to be graced with a very giving community.  I have a wee bowl and I intend to fill it--and the local food pantry's shelves.  It worked last year--I'm excited to see how it works this second year.

....the peaceful moments at the close of the day when it's me, paper and pen and an inventory of the good, the bad, and the awesome.  Sometimes I schluff off cuz I get lazy--but when I do the practice......what a difference it makes.  (duh!  LOL)

....the little things.....the HUGE little things.  Listening to leaves hit the ground, watching the halo around the moon, inflating an 8' purple spider...LOL.......carving punkins into Jack-o-lanters!  Celebrate those little things cuz they add up to such awesome moments.  It's tough to stay in a sucky moment when you have to include those little things.  (thank goodness for that!)

This past week has had some emotionally charged moments--tough moments that have torn at my heart and moved me to tears.  People get sick.  Diseases win sometimes.  People die.  I know it's a part of the circle--I know I can grieve, get angry--BE where my feet are for that moment.  I also know I can keep moving and doing whatever gets placed in front of me.
And I go back to those things that I can choose to hang on to when those moments happen.
Goodness, playfulness, generosity, fearless honesty with myself.... and those huge little things that bring me perspective and peace.

Potential Housing

Uh huh....
Going BACK to the pumpkin patch and snagging some of these.  I'll hope they dry out so I can make birdie whozits--whatever I opt to do for the birdies.  That requires me to do research of some sort.....which I'll do, eventually.
First step is using that as a lousy excuse to go back to the pumpkin patch.  LOL

<-- smart like that!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well......pfooey....
All the best intentions and NO PUMPKIN PATCH.  Hmmmmpf.
But the patio is half cleared off.
:-/
k........that is NOT the same as a meander through the pumpkin patch......
JUST sayin'.....
Dawning at the Creek
Fairy Wisdom
Freedom is like taking a bath - you have to keep doing it every day!
--Flo Kennedy
Nothing stands still. Change is the law of life. We may sometimes feel that our personal gains have to be won over and over again. But looked at from another perspective, that's not so: our solid personal gains are the ones that no one and nothing can take away from us.
They are tools for continued growth. Jobs, lovers, houses may change, but serenity and freedom of spirit are within our power to achieve - to maintain - or to give away.
Freedom means choice -- our choice of what we do with our bodies, our money, our lives. If we decline to choose, the choice will be made for us. If we don't use or claim our freedom, we are giving it away. Our lives need our active, creative participation every moment.
Like bathing, I must daily exercise my freedom. No one can do it for me.
Love is the magician, the enchanter that changes worthless things to joy, and makes right royal kings and queens of common clay. --Robert G. Ingersoll
Love invites us to perform our very best.
Knowing we're loved removes the edge of terror when we're contemplating the unfamiliar --the party with strangers or meeting a new boss.
We are transformed by love.
It comforts the questioning mind and the quavering heart.
We can endure the long moments of suspense while awaiting a hoped-for outcome when we know we're loved.
And those times we doubt another's love, times that are sure to come, will quickly slip by if we're reaching out with a loving heart to someone else.
Every event promises greater joy when experienced with a spirit laced with love.
The robin's song, the laughter of children, the vibrant colors that ooze from the petals of flowers capture our attention when we're feeling loved.
Love heals us and bonds us and promises us a life filled with moments of magic.
Wow......
Wow......I was NOT ready for this.
The past few days were approaching the 80 degree mark--standing on a country road to catch the sunset, watching harvest in the colours.....yesterday's endings were peaceful and promising.  Warm.  Inviting.
Tonight it's insane--feels like 32, wind's howling and forget anything that might resemble a sunset.  It's simply dark.  Gray.  Cold.  Bitter even......
I just wasn't ready for this.
The passing of the summer, the feel of the season for what the season is......  Trees will be naked given the north wind that's whipping about.
Maybe the wind'll move the leaves that carpet the back yard and I'll be minus the raking.
(there's got to be something in this for ME, dontchaknow!  LOL)
But egads......I was NOT ready for this.
I did have the foresight to drag up warmer clothes.
It IS the ending part of October.
And it is the prelude for winter.
But I was NOT ready for this.......
Yup--Another one!
Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves. --Carl Jung
In our worst time, we have been irritable and difficult to live with.?
And when we feel most irritable, we are least likely to look at ourselves.
Now
Now, when someone irritates us, it is very useful to ask ourselves why we are so annoyed.
We often find that the very thing that irritates us about someone else is the very quality in ourselves that we don't want to face.
When someone's whining bugs us, maybe it is our own capacity for whining that we reject.
When someone's self-absorption gets under our skin, maybe we are sensitive about our own self-centeredness.
Sometimes we find it easier to complain about a quality in others than to admit we are like that too.
Today I will use my feelings of irritation to guide me inward and know myself better.
Squish
Fairy Diddy
 "Stomp, Scram, Spit, Cry," a friend said. "Just don't go numb again. Maybe what you're really angry about is that you've been dead longer than Abe Lincoln, and now you're finally coming back to life."
There's a price to pay for passion.
We need to feel our emotions.
Action:  Pay attention to how you feel: what you love, dislike, hate, enjoy.
Pay attention to what grabs your heart, what interests you.
Discover who you are, not who you think you should be.
The events in our lives happen in a sequence in time, but in their significance to ourselves they find their own order. --Eudora Welty
We will experience no coincidence today.
All situations that transpire in the next 24 hours have their purpose.
No single event, not the tired, hurried smile from a boss, the phone call from a frantic friend, or the cold response from a co-worker is without impact on our current perception of life.
However, we shouldn't try to evaluate the full significance of any passing event without God's help.
Letting our Higher Power offer us clarity regarding the circumstances in our life will ensure a healthy perspective.
We've all experienced trauma because we exaggerated a problem rather than calmly let our inner wisdom guide us.
We're only an impulsive thought away from a flurry of problems.
 Likewise, we're only an instant away from peace and enlightenment.
 The quiet mind will be ever present if that's our wish.
I'll truly understand the events of today if I quietly let God reveal their significance.
QOTW
What are ten things you like to hear?
"Well done!"
"I love you, Nana."
"Let's get in the Jeep and go on an adventure."
"The pumpkin patch is open....."
"Look.....there's a prezzie for you..."
"Go ahead and take the rest of the day off."
"Can we play bubbles, Nana?"
"There's a meteor shower tonight."
"Want to go catch the sunset?"
"You don't have to eat the meat if you don't want to."
Daily Reading
Today I'll make a list of things that I would like to do, just for me and no one else.
 My list can contain things I've always wanted to do: things that are fun, things that are relaxing, or things I've only dreamed of doing.
I am beginning to realize what I want instead of what someone else tells me to want.
Ohhhhh......adventure!
Sun came out--and mid 70's happened.
Adventure time!!!
Yup--we found a trail that went around a lake and next to train tracks, believe it or not.  (gee.....imagine that!  LOL)
I saw duckies and sea gulls and hawks and an eagle and train cars and engines and a train depot and more duckies and STUFF!!
Yup--a whole 2.5 miles in 3 hours time!
Yes, I know that's less than one mile an hour.......it was all those darn 'OHlookachicken!!' moments.
Very cool.
And very tired feet.  LOL
But VERY cool!
Sleeping With Bread
Sleeping with Bread gives me an opportunity to use bits of the St. Ignatius Examen, weekly.  It creates another time between Him and I.....and it centers me in recognizing where G-d was in my week--and where I was at with G-d.
I look at what it is that I'm especially grateful for.
I review the week in pieces, recalling what I was doing, who I was with and the feelings that transpired during the events of the week.
I look for where I felt joy, love, fear, anger and sadness.....where I was troubled or challenged.
As I review those events and feelings, I look for when I moved towards G-d........and when I moved towards self.
And then--me and the Big Guy chat.
LOL  Not exactly the most well written explanation, but there you have it.
And here's where I've landed:
I'm especially grateful that I have a persevering G-d who chases me with a passion.
Because, frankly, I see more of ME in my week than I care to admit.  No surprise there.  I can be a self absorbed, selfish person.
Challenges this week came in fear--of all sizes.  And frankly, when I become fearful, I act angry.  I continue to go to great lengths to not LET myself look fearful, even when I clearly am.
Fear of loss.
Fear of failures,  inter-personally.
Fear of being less than I AM.
Fear of results that I truly have no control over.
Fear of looking stupid and incapable.  (there's a big one.....)
I've had multiple incidents in the week where, instead of running towards G-d and trusting all will be as it is suppose to be.....I've put in extra effort as I tried to ensure getting the results I wanted.
Go figure.
I'm a bit of a control freak.  *sigh*
There have also been times when I've turned TO the Big Guy and surrendered in the moment.  Being able to do that is always huge to me--even if it means politely excusing myself and hitting my knees in the ladies restroom.  LOL  No one has to know what business is truly transpiring in there.....it's been a strategy I've used for eons and it works for me.
But that fear jazz does me in....still........far too frequently than I'm okay with.
And I still find it a huge challenge to LET myself just BE fearful.
Ego, I'm sure.  I imagine myself to look like some teenager standing at the doorway of a haunted house--paralyzed and panicked stricken doesn't appear very attractive to me.  But I'd suppose that a jaw locked with muscles working overtime as I visibly fume isn't all that attractive either.  And it's a smoke screen to cover up what's true.
Faith.  I know.
Faith.  Just BE still and KNOW.......
Back to that "What am I?!  Chopped liver?!"
I'm grateful He doesn't 'grade me' as I muddle my way through fear-filled situations and set to the side what I know is true.
I'm grateful He chases me anyway--passionately--and lets me have as many 'do-overs' as I need.
Going back to tell the truth, owning I was fearful to the person I aimed my angry acts at is humbling, but it's purposeful in helping me get to where I truly aspire to be.
....out of the drivers seat and into simply bringing a message of what love can do.
...and yet another reading....
I love being able to say, "I was wrong," or "I made a mistake," and not feel like it's the end of the world. --Carol C.
Before, we felt so guilt-ridden we couldn't bear to admit we were less than perfect.
 Since our insides seemed so awful, we clung to an outside appearance of perfection.
That way, we hoped people wouldn't find out what we were really like.
 But we fooled no one, not even ourselves, for very long.
We have a chance to change that pattern.
Now, we can learn to admit our limitations, our mistakes, and our imperfections.
What a wonderful relief, not to have to be perfect.
We can be just who we are - very human beings who are groping toward the light.
Sometimes we find it, sometimes we lose our way, but still we strive onward.
And, in the process, we find ourselves, and serenity.
 Today help me keep working toward perfection, but forgive my mistakes along the way.
Fairy Reminder for Today
If you would be loved, love and be lovable. --Benjamin Franklin
We all desire to be loved.
Our common human characteristic is our need to count in someone else's life.
At least one other person needs us, we tell ourselves, when we feel least able to accept life's demands.
How alike we all are.
The paradox is that our own need for love is lessened when we bestow it on others.
Give it away and it returns.
A promise, one we can trust.
The reality about love and its path from sender to receiver and back again is often distant from our minds.
More often we stew and become obsessed with the lack of love's evidence in our lives.
Why isn't he smiling?
Why didn't she care?
 Has someone more interesting taken our place?
Choosing to offer love, rather than to look for it, will influence every experience we have.
Life will feel gentler, and the rewards will be many and far reaching.
Loving others promises me the love I desire.
But I can't expect it if I don't give it first.
Today's Reading from the Reading Fairy
To put the world in order,
We must first put the nation in order;
To put the nation in order,
We must first put the family in order;
To put the family in order,
We must first set our hearts right.
Just another TFTD
The best leaders are those who know how to follow. --Anonymous
Am I a leader or a follower?
The fact is, I am responsible for where I end up.
If I choose to be a follower, I'd better follow leaders who know where they're going.
And I had better know where they're going.
 If I choose to be a leader, I'd better know that I'm responsible for getting myself on the right path.
 I also must be honest with my followers, so they can make good choices.
I'm not responsible for my followers' choices, but I must give them the truth.
Being a leader doesn't always mean I know where I'll end up.
 But it can mean that I know I'm on the right path, following the lead from my Higher Power - one step at a time.
Meetings, meetings, meetings....
The best thing about back to back to back meetings......is the view in between.
Today's Fairy Reading
A weed is but an unloved flower.
--Ella Wheeler Wilcox
Through actively loving one another we nurture the richness of everyone's fuller expression. With no more than a nod of attention we can elicit a smile or perhaps a commitment to attempt again a challenge that defeated us earlier. None of us shines as brightly, moves as swiftly, or succeeds as easily as when someone special is rooting in our corner.
We each need someone special, and let's not forget that we are someone special to another who is walking our path. The loneliness of a day is diminished when we feel the love of someone near or far. The dread of any task is lessened when we bask in the knowledge that we are special to someone. Like roses, we bloom while under the gaze of loving eyes.
Let's remember to nurture the rose within the friends and strangers who are walking our way today.
Fairy Schtuff
I have one request: may I never use my reason against truth.
--Elie Wiesel
Honesty with ourselves is a great asset in every situation we confront. The skill to look reality square in the face and call it what it is takes us a good distance toward coping with it. However, many of us also have the skill to spin or rationalize our actions so that we don't have to face something unpleasant. That skill provides us with excuses and evasions but it is the greatest betrayal of our selves. When we use our brain to cleverly cover the truth of our actions, we often believe our own lies, and then we're incapable of rectifying them.
Just as dishonesty builds and grows on itself, so does honesty. We cannot one day decide to be honest and change in a flash because we don't see all of our self-deceit yet. But we can make the decision to be as honest as we know how. Then we will soon be surprised by how much is revealed to us as the fog of our self-deceit lifts and our honesty builds upon itself.
Today I will strive to see reality as it is and not shape it to suit my ego's desires.
The tales of a 3 year old.......
Last night's text:  Did Bug get a bath this weekend?
Oh--just every night!!  You know her and the squirting fishies!! If she's pulling that one at 10pm, do ya THINK it might be a manipulation to avoid bed and get to play with rubber duckies instead?
Tonight's text:  Okay....what kind of weird mushrooms were you feeding my kid?  She's saying you had crazy mushrooms and they FREAKED her out.
Ah.  Those would be the blue ceramic ones in the flower garden that she was having a conversation with yesterday--between rain showers.  :-/  And btw--how'd the bath deal turn out?  Honest........EVERY night WITH duckies and fishies and all things that squirt water.
OMG  She in such trouble.....
Well, she didn't say she ATE 'em!  She just said they were crazy and freaked her out.  They are blue--and they do look a little freaky peeking out from under all those leaves.....  Oh--And let me guess about the bath.........
YES SHE GOT A BATH.....the little booger.  O M G  She is in SUCH trouble!!
*laughing*
Oh, she IS her mother's child.......who is HER mother's child.
QOTW
What do you do when you can't sleep?
That depends on the hour.
If it's a 'can't fall asleep', I tend to try the old 'read a good book' trick.  Sometimes it works--sometimes notsomuch.
If it's a 'wake up and stay up' kinda deal--I get up and find something to amuse myself with.
Usually I surrender, flip on the pot of coffee and g'head and start the day.
Unless I'm feeling antagonistic playful.......
Then I'm freeing the stuffies in the headboard and working on the subtle (or not so subtle.....) attack on 'he-who's-pretending-he-wants-to-sleep'.
Attack of the killer frog!!
Mr. Zebra to the rescue!!
Neeerrraaaaammmmmhhhh quackquackquack!! (flying SUPER duck, dontchaknow!)
*ahem*
That's rare, of course.
I'm very considerate.
I'm really not THAT attention seeking.....
k........I'm not ALWAYS that attention seeking.
Sometimes I just roll over, pull out my hands and hum 'the itsy bitsy spider' song........
Today's Fairy Reading
A positive self-image is critical. Why? Because it is the glasses through which we look, the gloves with which we touch, the door by which we enter into a relationship with life. Self-image is not who we really are, but a combination of what we wish we were, who we're afraid we are, and who we imagine other people think we are.
We act out in detail the role we've assigned ourselves in this world. That role, our self-image, works like a key that either fits or doesn't fit a world full of locked doors. Different keys open different doors. And some doors lead to bad places, as we all know. It isn't easy to change keys, but it is infinitely worth it. One reason is that we always pass our self-image on to our children; they know us too well to be fooled. If we want our children to walk tall, laugh happily, and sing joyously - we ourselves must do these things for them to see.
Today, I pray for the courage to challenge my tendency to discount myself. All my strong points will be very clear to me today.
Child Labor
The Rural Route
Sleeping with Bread
It's been week in which I've been reminded multiple times:
G-d is large and in charge.
"In MY time....."
"This one ain't yours......hands off......."
"Be still and KNOW."
"......ain't nothing you and I cannot wade through....together...."
".....what am I, chopped liver?"
My Maker possesses a way of getting my attention--in ways that make me chuckle and help me breathe. He works through people and circumstances to get my attention loud and clear.
And as irritating as some moments have been this week--those same moments have provided me with great joys.
I need to recognize that--joy has been present
And not simply been at those times when He's delivered 'what I want, when I wanted it'.
There's a source of great joy in and of itself.
I've even chuckled at myself when I've attached that "AMen" to the end of prayers knowing it was a 'but you know what I want'.
Silly me--it's good to be able to laugh at myself.
His time works!
Hands off works!
Knowing.....works.
Knowing it's doable with a bit of help--works.
And no--the Big Guy ain't chopped liver.  *laughing*
I've gotten what my heart desired over and over again.
Keeping stock of when 'Mel got what she wanted' isn't what this process is about this morning.
It's about the deep seeded, heart wrapped understanding of what has never been mine and what that frees me up to BE.
It's cool being one of G-d's kids........
Fairy Reminder
Learning involves gains based on the effort we expend. We learned early that we couldn't listen to a music box unless we wound it. We learned we couldn't get good grades unless we studied. And now we've learned we can't change our behaviors without working at it.
If we can't see the results of the energy we put into things, then our motivation, determination, and confidence can't grow. Some things will come easily, some won't. But the things we work on now will mean the most in the end.
