The ease with which we genuinely love others is directly proportional to our commitment to loving as a priority in our lives. Food for thought--at least for my thoughts.
I've had this 'goal' forever. It's about the 11th step and it's all about 'brotherly love'. In that mix is 'intimate love'--but overall, it's been about 'brotherly love'...genuine love for other human beings, period.
Not an easy goal for me.
One that's somehow gotten easier as I go.
It's all about 'letting it look how it REALLY is'......it's about letting go of that need to 'appear' a certain way to feel 'comfortable in my own skin'.
It's been a lesson about where I've drawn my identity from..... and for years it was in being that 'tough gal that nobody messed with'.
I still don't want to be messed with--LOL....but who DOES?!
Then comes the quest to 'let it look how it REALLY is'.....
I care about other human beings.
LETTING it look like I care about others has been a chore.
Not because they're unloveable--certainly as children of G-d we each DO have a right to be right where our feet are.
But LOVING thoughts haven't always been my first thought.
I was told 'act as IF'....and I 'acted as if' pretty darn good.
After all, "the rule is tough on ourselves, easier on others" and "love and tolerance of others is our code".
I haven't always 'felt' or thought in those terms, but I was bonded by 'right actions'....loving and kindly actions.
I had a big, cranky wisepersoninmylife who endorsed me doing 'right actions' no matter what I felt or thought. I mean, c'mon--who WANTS to go back to make apologies to a waitress YOU felt entitled to pop off to because the service was crappy?! Not me.....and it didn't matter, didn't matter, didn't matter--I didn't have a license to treat people poorly---period.
"It's not required for you to WANT to do something to do it." He was right then, he's right now.
I practiced right actions, even when I didn't want to.
I don't know when my thinking altered, I just know it did.
I didn't need someone's threats of bodily harm, some accountability for making amends to those I treated poorly as a motivation to treat people kindly.
I don't know where that 'first thought' to tear off people's faces and spit down their throats WENT--I just know there came a day when I was searching for that thought, much like someone who probes their mouth for that missing tooth the dentist yanked because of the pain factor.
Weird....but somewhere along the way loving actions and loving thoughts became the first thought and plots for mass genicide became less and less.
To love is a decision first, an action second, a value next.Which leads me to here.
I made a decision to act loving, even when I didn't feel like it--even if under duress. ;-)
I practiced it, even when it wasn't my first thought or desire to BE loving and kindly.
And suddenly, I've awakened a 'loving person'.
"You are one of THE most loving and kindly people I know."
When someone says this to YOU--well, to ME.....LOL I do a doubtake and think "Oh, if you ONLY KNEW!!!!!!"
Sometimes I feel compelled to challenge THEIR thinking....LOL...mostly because I have a reputation to maintain, cuz I'm scared of having that reputation, of that becoming who I AM, of what that 'means'.
There's that FEAR crap.
There's that preoccupation with 'how it looks' to the rest of the world.
But I can't undo it fast enough. LOL
That's just the truth!
I'm doing too many kindly things with no thought.
I need to quit that!!!!
I'm being too loving without even THINKING about it forcryingoutloud!!
And when folks pipe up with how it looks to them, I ought to be humbled and feeling pretty grateful.
Truth is, I DO feel that--and I'm practicing LETTING it look like it really is for me.
But that's just darn hard for me to do because of that FEAR factor.
This is JUST not the "me" I was eons back...it's been a few decades in the learning, whittling away at all those resentments and angers, discovering just how graced I truly have been in this lifetime to GET to do what I get to do today.
It's taken me forever to get 'right sized' in all this.
I'm just another child of G-d....no more, no less......and in no position to stand as judge and jury on any of the rest of His children.
I'm not claiming I've arrived--not by any means.
I am claiming it as my value today.
I've worked it, I've worn it--and IT now wears me.
I can't get it 'OFF' of me fast enough.
Most days I'm not sure I really do want it 'off' of me.
I get to have a different kind of impact in people's lives today BECAUSE I've become "one of the most kindly and loving people" they know.
I like the impact--I don't know that I like it all the time, but most times I do.
I like that I get to touch people's lives for the good today.
Fear of what that leaves me as my identiy is a piss poor reason to go back to doing what didn't work for the good.
I don't want to harm people any more.
I don't know that I could do that planfully anymore.
It takes effort!
Loving has become effortless work.
I learned that lesson on a HUGE scale when the Brit showed up in my life.
I'm pretty sure HOW it happened for me.
I'm even pretty convinced WHY it's happened for me.
But I'm still searching for that 'missing tooth' and going 'hmmmmmmmm...........'
;-)
