Granddad had a birthday...

Well, he sorta had a birthday.
We tried to have a birthday?

Yeah, well--he got a few prezzies and phone calls AND he got baby urp on him.....before he cancelled the day.
No, it wasn't the baby urp that cancelled the whole works.

It was the headache and the nausea--and the general overall 'uckiness'.

He's safely tucked in bed as I type.

The house is returned to normal--all bug items returned to their 'bug hideout' until her next return (to be scheduled! HA!!) The bug thinks it's quite the deal to get a weekend with Nana and Granddad--the girl thinks it's a GREAT deal for sleeping in and relishing peace and quiet. And I just think it's a good deal for everyone......me 'specially. LOL

Lemme say it......I'll sleep really, really, REALLY well tonight! OMG what a bundle of energy....

Yeah, well....I might have a bit of a headache goin' on..... Not queezy.....yet.....

*sigh*

I'm gonna haffta text the girl and warn her.
I'm sure it won't have any bearing on the bug returning for her next visit......

Ohhhhhhhh noooooo..
Sheeeeeeee'll be back.

She got cool bibs and Nana let her play with noisy toys all she wanted!

:-)

Today's Fairy Reading

It's not how much we accomplish in life but how we treat others along the way that counts. We can accomplish our daily tasks while being kind to other people. But choosing the latter as the more important action will bring a far greater sense of well-being than succeeding at "moving mountains."

I will get done everything I really need to do today if I focus on being kind to the women and men who cross my path.

And the burst goes on.....

OMG......

The girl was wayyyyyyyy too eager to have me kidnap the bug for the weekend.
*laughing*

I think I get it now, tyvm!!
For sure I was closer to 'getting it' than himself was.....

She's mobile!
O
M
G is she mobile.

Up. Down. Burst of speed to 'over there'. Pull herself up. Plop down and look at ya like you're the one who did the evil to make that one happen. Grumble, cry......another burst of speed to 'over there'.... UP, down, UP, bounce bounce bounce.....down, grumblecry, out comes the lip.....

What's a nap again?
OH--that bit of time one gets for a break from the constant burst of energy with a good set of lungs. *laughing*

"She was such a good baby....."

*laughing*

He's such a whimp.......LOLOL

Thought for the Day

The gift of love means this: I want to share with you whatever I have that is good.
--John Powell, S.J.

How loving are we, really? Do we keep score when we do favors for a friend, keeping in mind that we're owed one? Do we hoard rather than share a favorite treat, hoping to prolong our own feast? And the good mood, when it's ours, do we use it to help another raise her spirits or do we secretly gloat because we're "in a better place"?

The opportunity to respond with love visits us throughout each day. A smile, a kind gesture, including someone in a conversation, noticing a job well done, are acts of love, acts that connect our hearts, at least for a moment.

When someone has shared love with us in some form, we notice it and are moved.

I'm sure every cell number on the girl's cellphone was added to that text and her attached photo.

Apparently I won't be getting a copy of the photo--leastwise not yet.
...."being held on to for blackmail purposes".....and something about 'could be good for one pony to be kept at Nana's house'..

Right.

Well then.....

What can I say.....

She was happily fed, all strapped in and buckled in.....warm and snuggly under her blankie in Nana's car, all ready for her weekend adventure-- WITH her new stuffed moose that Nana bought her. Playin' away happily....

Locked in a running car, playing away happily......

LOCKED IN A RUNNING CAR, playing away happily.

The other other boy took it quite well, actually. "She's fed, she's got a new toy...at least the heater's running so one of us is warm....and the flashing lights are kinda cool....."

The girl--decided photos with her cellphone were an excellent idea....
I mean--"baby's first interaction with law enforcement".....

Oh wait.

"Baby's first interaction with law enforcement AND firemen."

Maybe it'll be a whole scrapbook page...

Others do not know what's best for us.

We do not know what's best for others.

It is our job to determine what's best for ourselves.

Giving advice, making decisions for others, mapping out their strategy, is not our job. Nor is it their job to direct us. Even if we have a clean contract with someone to help us we cannot trust that others always know what is best for us. We are responsible for listening to the information that comes to us. We are responsible for asking for guidance and direction. But it is our responsibility to sift and sort through information, and then listen to ourselves about what is best for us. Nobody can know that but ourselves.

A great gift we can give to others is to be able to trust in them - that they have their own source of guidance and wisdom, that they have the ability to discern what is best for them and the right to find that path by making mistakes and learning.

To trust ourselves to be able to discover - through that same imperfect process of struggle, trial, and error - is a great gift we can give ourselves.

Today, I will remember that we are each given the gift of being able to discover what is best for ourselves. God, help me trust that gift.

All is well. All is well. All is well. All is well. All is well. All is well......k.....got it!

In the midst of turmoil, let us remember, all is well; Well......I got me some of that.... All is well. All is well. All is well. All is well......k....got it!

in the midst of the pain of self-awareness, all is well. .....ha.....self awareness.... Yeah, yeah..... All is well. All is well. All is well. All is well....k....seriously--GOT it!

The struggle of the turmoil, the pain that accompanies the lessons of self-awareness, are preparing us for becoming all we are meant to become. Oh no ya don't.....this is NOT about multi-tasking and preparing me for another growth experience. MORE? Yeah, yeah.....I know--all is well.....

We each have a special gift to offer in this life. Can I be not-so-gifted, please? I mean, seriously...can I just be one of those normal run of the mill everyday folks who gets to read newspapers and watch television and go shopping and....yaknow....normal? Yes, I know--be still...alien. Get over it--all is well, all is well, all is well!

We will come to understand those gifts and be able to give them as we grow with the pain of self-understanding. Wow. What's it mean when I can say "I KNOW this well." Ummmmm..maybe it says I oughta be able to then take the 'me' out of the equation and rest in knowing how well loved I am, how very well taken care of I am...how very privileged I am to be of usefulness to You and others, huh?

All is well. Yup. All IS well. :-)
Deep down happiness ripples,
bit by bit it's rippling to the surface....

Oh yeah.....just been hugged by G-d.
It don't get no better than that....

Ripple, ripple, ripple! Voile'......happiness!!!!!

On the lighter side.....

The sister's hubby took great joy in sending this on to me.

<-- is now in process of plotting

*snickering*

<-- believes in retribution
(of the fun type, of course..... :-/)

A bit about determined.......

I hurt.

Inside and out, there's pain.
It's not the outside that has my energy...it's the inside that's eating it up.
When you care about a life.......when that life matters more to you than it does to them, when you get up after being knocked down so many times still determined "You can't MAKE me go away".....it starts to hurt.

I cannot stay down......won't....
I remain because it's what I do....it's who I am............

I do not surrender easily.
But I'm not a victim of the unbridled wrath--I'm a volunteer who stands ready. And I'll stand up and weather it again if need be--cuz it matters......cuz another life MATTERS.

Do as you will.

Say what you want.
I stand my ground in YOUR life.....the life that matters to this one.

I'm angry.

Things were said that were said deliberately, with malice and forethought......planful, spiteful words spoken with hopes of driving that anger in me to the surface, with hopes of making me go away.

I won't.

With much pain still in my heart.......with all my heart because the life MATTERS to this one--

I WILL NOT GO AWAY.

I've inventoried it.

I'm clean......my side of the street is clean.

I won't live in another's garbage.
I'll pick it up with the hurt in my heart and deposit it where garbage goes.

But I will NOT go away.

To be continued.....

I'm angry.

I've inventoried it.
And I've inventoried it.

I've looked at my part.....and I cannot see where I violated the required 'necessary, kind and true' in my interactions with the other person.

I'll inventory it again when I'm less angry....cuz right now--I'm really, really, really angry....

I'll pray for the other person--and for me.
It's just what I do....

Into the tummy....

Yeah, well....

Quinoa.
Some kinda weed lookin' stuff...sorta looks like it before it's harvested.....somewhere in some higher elevation place far, far away......

"High in protein."
That seems to be the issue for he-who-indulged-in-a-cookbook.

A COOKBOOK for crying out loud....

Not that I haven't reaped the rewards of said cookbook.
There were tamales on Friday.
A quiche on Saturday.
And Sunday--leftover tamales and quiche.
I mean, c'mon....we're two people--dunno what he was thinkin' when the recipe clearly says 'serves six'.

Yesterday we had kebabs.
I offered to wheel out the charcol grill for him.
I figured with the blizzard conditions it'd be......different. Seeings how 'different' is seemingly the 'in' thing, I even offered to dig out the flip flops, crank the heat up and serve drinks with funky straws and sunshine happy glasses.
Yeah.....well......he passed.
*shrugs*

But the kebabs were great!

Guess I save the flip flops for another day.

Much like I'd like to save the 'quinoa' for another day.
It's a buncha seeds....that you're suppose to wash off and then cook sorta like you cook rice.

And then--you're suppose to eat it.

High in protein, he says.
Low in natural sugars, he says.....

What the heck?!
k....
Looks like birdie seed.

I'm thinkin' that was the wrong thing to say.
Wild guess from the reaction I got......

k.....
Seriously.....
I need to get that cookbook away from him.
He's talkin' about browning birdie seed and sauteing them with onions......

Into the woods

Things that make me happy

....unexpected pretty painted birdie postcards.

....noisy baby toys. :-)

....four wheel drive on snow-drifted country roads.

....hoar-frosted everythings!

....drawing surprise happy suns on shower walls.

....warm woolly mittens with smileys on 'em.

....a working internet provider.

....kebabs in the middle of a blizzardy day......oh YUM were those good.

Today's Thought

Guilt can prevent us from setting the boundaries that would be in our best interests, and in other people's best interests. Guilt can stop us from taking healthy care of ourselves.

We don't have to let others count on the fact that we'll always feel guilty. We don't have to allow ourselves to be controlled by guilt - earned or unearned! We can break through the barrier of guilt that holds us back from self care. Push. Push harder. We are not at fault, crazy, or wrong. We have a right to set boundaries and to insist on appropriate treatment. We can separate another's issues from our issues, and let the person experience the consequences of his or her own behavior, including guilt. We can trust ourselves to know when our boundaries are being violated.

Shades of Grey

Sleeping with Bread......

And when Mel's drained and feels like there's nothing left to give?

* I get in the Jeep for an adventure with the camera.
* I visit the Monastary. Go figure that one.......
* I run away to visit the bug.
* I pull out the toy box. Life's too short to NOT play, I'm tellin' ya!
* I make a bubble bath and toss in rubber duckies, whizzing penguins, flashy gold fishies and bubbling salt bombs ..and sometimes I pull out the bath crayons. 'Nuff said.....
* I turn on the CD player (k....I have he-who-knows-how-to-turn-on-the-CD-player turn on the CD player) and I slide in the tunes.
* I grab the Big Book, open up to a page and start reading.
* I pick up the phone and jabber at someone.....anyone.
* I fix myself a really good cuppa java and treat myself to some fun flavored creamy stuff.

I've done all the above during the past week.
It's been a full, trying time. There's so many 'life happenings' around me and with me--and like the rest of the best--I can run myself stupid trying to 'tend' to the business at hand.
It was that kind of week.
I'd run myself 'that kinda stupid'.
So I grabbed what I could, when I could.
It didn't solve the problems set in front of me.
It changed absolutely none of the dynamics of the 'stuff'.....it's still there, still pressing at me, still sucking a lot of energy (emotional and physical) from me. Doing what I do for a passion is enough of a strain. Toss in working with newcomers to sobriety, working with end stage cancer victims, working with friends and families of alcoholics....helping folks work through their own struggles in life..... 'Stuff' that interferes with me getting things done on timelines developed for me. 'Stuff' that creeps up on me when I least expect it...'stuff'!
The dynamics of it all haven't altered one bit.
There's still loads of 'stuff'...and that isn't seemingly going to alter one lick.

I'd be lying to say it doesn't suck the life out of me sometimes--this week has been one of those times. Lots going on--almost constantly. This has been a week where I've hesitated to pick up a ringing phone.......

But I've managed to go through the list of things Mel can do to stay sane and semi-rested.
I've managed to steal moments and created puddles on the bathroom floor, tracked mud across the kitchen floor in joyful anticipation of what I mighta captured on the camera.......and I've coloured a few geometric colouring pages that now hang happily on the kitchen refridgerator.
Just walking past them is enough to remind me:

Slow down long enough to play, Mel.
Look for those little things splayed out in front of you that you've missed in your rush.
Turn on some tunes.

Rest when weary....
And that's been enough.....
.......this week.......

I am (so I've decided....) maybe in need of a few more new toys......

:-)

The examen, based on the spiritual exercises of St. Ignatius, helps a person hold onto what spiritually nourishes him by looking at what is giving him consolation in his life or causing him desolation. It allows someone to express his gratitude to God for the good stuff and turn to him for solace for the bad stuff. It is quite simple. You simply ask yourself, in the last day/week/month what gave me consolation and what caused me desolation.

It is one of the great and pleasing mysteries of life that we gain by giving things up.
Instead of grabbing things or demanding from others if we give something up, we leave a space for something new to enter our lives.

And the best part about Sunday.....

k...it was either the Cheerio eatin' OR it was the balls shooting up to go down and shoot up again. OR--it was the Cheerio eating WHILE the balls were shooting up to go down and shoot up again.

Yeah, yeah..... I'm considering adding one to my toy basket. Ummmm...for when the bug comes to visit, dontchaknow.

The balls shoot up to go down and shoot up again--AND it's sings a happy song and has lights and everything!
Just sayin'....

I will not say mean things....

......about my internet provider.
I will not say mean things about my internet provider.

I will NOT say mean things about my internet provider.

It's okay to feel hurt; it's okay to cry; it's okay to heal; it's okay to move on to the next feeling, when it's time.

Our willingness and capacity to feel joy will eventually match our willingness and capacity to feel hurt.

Today's Fairy Reminder

Emotional pain does not have to devastate us. We can sit still, feel the pain, figure out if there's something we need to do to take care of ourselves, and then go on with our life.

We do not have to act in haste; we do not have to punish others to get control over our feelings.

Real power comes from allowing ourselves to be vulnerable enough to feel hurt.
Real power comes from knowing we can take care of ourselves, even when we feel emotional pain.
Real power comes when we stop holding others responsible for our pain, and we take responsibility for all our feelings.

What are three things that are on your desk that shouldn’t be?

Well, goodness. I posted a photo of the top of the desk earlier this week.

And just so ya know.....everything on the desk SHOULD be there, thankyouverymuch.

But--I suppose if we're talking about things that other folks might deem 'professional desk unworthy'....

The dancing penguiny guy--he wiggles, he flaps, he makes colours on his tummy and he squawks and mutters.
The antique NYCS oil can--it's a prezzie and I like all things NYCS in the study, tyvm.
And the wee bitty penguiny guy that stands on the very top corner of the computer monitor--he's had a home there for 4 years now and he likes it very much. He's waiting for The Brit to complete the ice house on the trainlayout before he relocates.

Bitty Thought for the Day

If we are unhappy without a relationship, we'll probably be unhappy with one as well. A relationship doesn't begin our life; a relationship doesn't become our life. A relationship is a continuation of life.

Frozen Dinner

Lost

"Mel--I have no clue where I am.... I'm lost..... Mel....I did a stupid thing. I went for a walk--and I'm drunk. I planned this. You're right--I plan them all.... I'm lost. I'm so lost, you have no clue....."

It's hard to end a phone call when it starts like that, when you hear the terror in their voice.

Yes, he was intoxicated.
Yes, he'd made the choice to leave his home to walk in an intoxicated state.

No--I couldn't....wouldn't simply say "sounds like you have a problem" and no--I didn't end the call.

.....And yes......he's lost.....

He was scared enough to listen to me.
Scared enough to tell me he was done, to ask that I meet with him in the morning.
Scared enough to be willing to follow what I asked of him.
Scared enough....

He's home, safe.
That was my sole mission for tonight.

And I hope......I hope when the light of day comes--he remains scared enough.

Another backroad moment.....

Quiet peacefulness....

I needed to grab some. Cabin fever with over two weeks of subzero weather--snow, windchills....traveling just hadn't been a good plan...

Quiet peacefulness...... I could hear the eagles talking about my presence (all about me, don'tchaknow!).
The water was whispering and the wind was holding it's breath.

I needed the journey.
It's been strained, every corner turned.
My brain's been in overdrive--warp speed with my hair on fire, I'm inventing things to do. I've done fairly well with the closet cleaning and decluttering cupboards.
Himself hasn't quite caught on to the overload I'm dealing in.
He's got his own noise that he's wrapped up in right now.

It's that January 'stuff'.
I know it happens.
I know it's just a part of the 'deal'.
Strained.....around every corner it's another stretch to be all that I am and not get wrapped up in what greets me.

Quiet peacefulness....
Welcomed.

Needed.

Another frosted day

#1.....that lives in the house that Mel built.....

Yup...goobery thingies...*sigh*

Things that make me happy

....crunching my way though snow.

....frosted everything.

....opening the door to an organized cupboard.

....discovering forgotten, tucked away bath toys.

....hearing himself whistling the Llama song first thing in the morning. *laughing*

....new toys for the bug to play with.

....gentle, quiet harp music.

....the hot pad for smelly candles. Look! No fire!!

....funny little turtles.

Today's Fairy Thought

We are never starting over. We are moving forward in a perfectly planned progression of lessons. We will find ourselves with certain people - in love, family, friendships, and work - when we need to be with them. When the lesson has been mastered, we will move on. We will find ourselves in a new place, learning new lessons, with new people.

No, the lessons are not all painful. We will arrive at that place where we can learn, not from pain, but from joy and love.

Our needs will get met.

Today, I will accept where I am in my relationships, even if that place is awkward and uncomfortable. If I am in the midst of endings, I will face and accept my grief. God, help me trust that the path I am on has been perfectly and lovingly planned for me. Help me believe that my relationships are teaching me important lessons. Help me accept and be grateful for middles, endings, and new beginnings.

Sleeping with Bread

The examen, based on the spiritual exercises of St. Ignatius, helps a person hold onto what spiritually nourishes him by looking at what is giving him consolation in his life or causing him desolation.

It allows someone to express his gratitude to God for the good stuff and turn to him for solace for the bad stuff.

Himself sometimes has great fun with my pronunciation and my complete slaughtering of the English language.
Don't get me wrong--there's a whole lot of times I purpose to make him nutzo with the butchering....and I have my fair share of laughs at his command (of what he insists)--is English.
Of course, he professes that he speaks English and I speak.....American.

I of course, insist that they might have invented the language--WE, however, perfected it.
Silly person......

But apparently I don't say 'get'--well, I do....but to his ears it comes out 'git'.
And in his world:

git:
1. A completely ignorant, childish person with no manners.
2. A person who feels justified in their callow behaviour

He's corrected me multiple times this week on this little word--taking every opportunity to point it out over and over and over again.
I've taken great pains to make up words, misuse words and mispronounce words every chance I get just to terrorize him. And I've tried to leave the word 'get' out of my vocabulary.
I'll.... 'retrieve' it.
Lemme....hold that door for ya.
I don't....understand it.

I dare say--mispronounced word or not--'git' IS a bit how I've been acting.
Not just with people, mind you--but (obviously) in my relationship with my Maker.

I'da been well reminded to get (git) my sights off of the immediate and broaden my vision a bit. There's a bigger picture. I just fail to see it sometimes. (colour me human, eh?)
And as often as 'git'/'get' has been brought to my attention this week, it wasn't until I sat to inventory for SWB that the bells and whistles went off.....go figure....

G.I.T.
G-d's Implicit Timing.

Well......shoot......

I guess I shouldn't get ruffled the next time himself decides to take a poke at my English.

I G.I.T it.......

When you've had a setback, ask yourself this: What is it attempting to tell you?

Often the setbacks can turn out to be very fortunate occurrences because they prevent you from going any further down a dead-end road.

Setbacks force you to re-evaluate your attempts. And that will invariably lead to a much more successful way of doing something.

I didn't mind AT all when Spadoman gifted me with an old time photo of the washing up basin and pitcher. Isn't it just awesome! (Hoping he doesn't mind me showing off the prezzie....it's way cool.....)

This is not a good sign.....

It's Thursday--and all day long I've thought it was Tuesday.

Well, I've mostly operated on the thought of it being Tuesday.
I even rang the boss to let him know that I wouldn't be making it to the meeting this afternoon.
The good news is there WAS a meeting this afternoon.
The bad news--I was referring to the meeting on Tuesday that I'd already showed up for on Tuesday..... of this week........

BAD sign.
Good indication of Mel NOT being present in the moment.

The good news is tomorrow is Friday.

Gee.
This was a really short week.......

*sigh*
k....not really.......

The View

Today's Reading

When we were children, we may have tried to fit an outgrown article of clothing on to our body. Now, as adults, we may go through a time of trying to force fit attitudes that we have outgrown. We may need to do this to give ourselves time to realize the truth. What worked last year, what was so important and special to us in times past, doesn't work anymore because we've changed. We've grown.

We can accept this as a valid and important part of growing. We can let ourselves go through experimentation and grief as we struggle to make something fit, trying to figure out if indeed it no longer fits, and why. We can explore our feelings and thoughts around what has happened.

Then, we can put last year's toys away and make room for the new.

What are you currently avoiding?

I swear the questions I turn to are planted there by some cousin of the reading fairy.....

Soooo.....
I have the right to remain silent.
.....anything I say or do could be used against me in a court of law.

I do have the right to legal counsel--
And one will be appointed to me if I so desire.....

How'm I doin'?

Get the sense that I'm not willing to tell on myself just yet?
Obviously..... *sigh*

I'm avoiding dealing in the things I'm avoiding dealing with.
Howzat?!

k....
Clearing out the basement storage room.
Doing the stupid report for the end of the month (yes, it's darn near the middle of the month--I'm avoiding well, don'tchathink...)
Appointments....ugh....
Financial 'stuff' that needs straightened out for the bazillionth time.
Paperwork of the unpleasant type--disciplinarian in nature...
Wading through mounds of tax stuff and getting that ready for filing.
Balancing the stupid checkbook which I never balance.
Clearing out kitchen cupboards of (once again) unused 'things'. (how does that happen again and again and again?)
Meeting with WPIML (there's that written 4th step stuff that I know is coming!)
Vacuuming. LOL And I even like the vacuum! It's a super duper one!!
Sewing lost/stolen/strayed buttons on dress slacks.
Etc, etc....ad infinite, ad nauseum.....et al......

Yup.....
How about if we just consolidate the answer to: "Oh, just about everything!!!!!"

Making progress...making himself nutz
