I snuck the photo at a friends home. Oh, no worries--I told on myself. Very kind--I was offered more opportunities to take a shot or two (which I did...cuz it's so simple and beautiful).
A while back I lived in a barn that we were converting. In our first few winters it was so cold that the water in my glass of water would freeze in my bedroom. Made getting up and washing a doubtful pleasure, never mind the jug and basin! xx
I saw this beautiful picture yesterday and didn't think much about my own experience with the wash basin and pitcher until I read the comments about actually using one. When we lived on the Gunflint Trail we had one. I had two daughters at home, teen agers no less. If they wanted running water, it was a 1/4 mile walk to the dining hall at the YMCA camp where we lived and worked. They opted for sleep in time and the washbasin before the 1 mile ride across the lake on the snowmobile to get to the car for the 3 mile ride to the bus stop which took them the 33 miles to school. The bus came at 7:05 a.m. Yep, we had a washbasin once. I walked to the dining hall, but stopped at the outhouse on the way.
It is a really nice photo. I bet if you fooled around with one of those photoshop deals, you could get it to look like it was taken in the early days.

Oh I so need to 'declutter'....LOL
lovely!
can you imagine having to chip the ice from the water in the jug in the morning tho, before you are able to pour it into the basin. . .
one of my loveliest xmas gifts this year was a really gorgeous bar of soap - brings such pleasure to the simple task of washing my hands, it's amazing
now, combine my soap with your basin (and hot water in the jug) - ah! heaven. . .
it is a lovely display
and I'm with ILTV...
wondering how it would have been to live in a time where the pitcher and basin were functional.

I can most definitely imagine the ice chipping scenario! *shiver*
