Now everybody sing!!
Nobody likes me♫
Everybody hates me
Think I'll go eat worms
♫Big fat juicy ones
Skinny little bitty ones
See how they squiggle
And squirm
Bite the head off ♫
Suck the juice out
Throw the skins away
Aren't you glad
You don't eat worms
♫For meals three times a day.
And AGAIN!!!!!
I'm a manager.
I was put to the test of 'acting like a manager' not so long ago......which meant things like: Stop fixing meals when the cook is absent, pretending your a cook. Stop working late nights during crisis situations that other people can handle--you hire competent people. Stop running kids to medical appointments, pretending your a day manager--you have two day managers and they really can do their job. Stop micromanaging your supervisors and LET them make every day decisions that they really can make. Stop doing their work--let them put contact notes in for sessions with students that you're not suppose to be meeting with, you have numerous therapy staff on payroll. Stop......
Yes, I liked being able to claim that I'm not asking folks to do things that I don't do.....however, the results were burning me out on both ends and the jobs I was accountable TO do...were getting done at home, after hours, equating to 70-80 hour weeks. SOMEone needed to tell me ENOUGH. I can be a bit of an overachiever/overdoer. I was offered another position because 'maybe your heart isn't IN managing the program.....'
I'm pretty sure where my heart isn't......and it isn't in another town doing less than I do today. I'm of the type that can't do less than what I'm capable of doing. I cannot know less than what I know. I just ain't that good of an actress........
Managing people and places means I get to be a cheerleader and a celebrator of achievements. Managing also means making unpopular decisions sometimes--I get to tell people NO. I get to tell people DON'T DO THAT.
Lemme assure you.....GREAT fun to tell that to my three 'first reports' who did such an upstanding job while I was gone.
NO.
NO.
Don't do that again.......ever........
k.....
They'll get over it.
I'll get over it.
I'll just sing another round and keep moving.
Ohhhhhhh.....♫Nobody likes me
Everybody hates me
Think I'll go eat worms! Lalalalalalalala
*humming*♫

HA! I am the SAME WAY, Mel!
I tried managing for about three years and finally had to give up because I am just not the manager type. Supposedly, a good manager is not suppose to do anything except designate what's to be done, and I simply can't do that because I always wanna pitch in a help.
And like you, I was getting paid to work 40 hours a week, but was working 55 and 60.
Plus, I decided that I'd much rather be out there interacting with the customers instead of being in an office all day doing book work.
Nope...I'm not a good manager.
X
Something tells me that's your opinion. People often don't mind boundaries especially when they are rational. I kinda think you may be waaaaaay more critical of you than others would be.
You hired "big people". They'll deal with "no".
As you said, let them. And you know that 70 hours a week is really really bad on health! What's that saying about us being on our deathbed saying, "Omigod! If only I'd worked harder."
