Practicing Principles

Does anyone actually KNOW what principles are?

Can I just confess that I didn't have a clue.

I'm not going to feel dumb confessing that, honest I'm not. LOL

I'm going to blame (go figure...LOL) growing up as I did. My father was a bit busy doing other things. He couldn't be bothered to teach me principled living.......'cept to preach the 'do as I say, not as I do', which was never real effective with me. GO figure that one, too!

I learned about principles when some cranky, MEAN crusty old fart wisepersoninmylife shoved a list under my nose.

"Huh. . . . . . So that's what 'nice' people actually DO? Geeze......what idiots."

I'm pretty convinced I heard something close to: "Your opinion of other people is NONE of your freaking business and it ain't mine either.......DO what's on the list." (did I mention wisepersoninmylife was a bit on the crusty/cranky side? ;-)

Right.

The list.....
  1. Honesty

  2. Hope

  3. Faith

  4. Courage

  5. Integrity/Trust

  6. Willingness

  7. Humility

  8. Brother love/Responsibility

  9. Justice/Self Discipline

  10. Perseverance

  11. Spirituality

  12. Service

Rightttttttttttttt.

DO those things?
Now, this is where it got a bit complicated. LOL I had my own version of what each of those words meant and it didn't quite jive with what that cranky, MEAN crusty old fart wisepersoninmylife was thinkin'.

Another freaking growth opportunity..... *sigh*
But learn through practice, I did!
And I had lots of practice.

LOTS of disciplined and structured practice.
And eventually I got around to discovering something......
All of G-d's kiddos were 'worthy' of love and kindliness.
ALL of 'em.

And sonofagun.....I was one of HIS kiddos.

Now, I know I'm a bassackwards kinda gal on a whole lotta things.
Most folks tell me "You have to learn to love yourself before you can truly love others....."

Uh uh....that's just not how it played out for me.
I got to the point where I had little problem loving others exactly as they were, warts and all. LOTS of practice brought me there.
The awakening that I was just AS deserving of being loved......and WAS AS LOVED--Holyfudgebuckets.....

And then to let myself qualify to be AS loved by me as others were.... Whoa....

In my life there are twelve 'simple' steps which represent twelve 'simple' principles.
Practicing them in all my affairs has been an adventure. I've yet to do that perfectly--but, by darn, I keep practicing!

The rewards of the practice has paid back a thousand fold--at least!

Practice.
Practice!
PRACTICE!!!

(Oy......I'm a greedy little monger..I want MORE!!) LOL

Mel!
I know I have been away too much lately (not good for me mind!) but velieve it or not...you were in one of my dreams last night & so, although I just woke up & haven't even had coffee yet... I had to come see you!
You are an inspiration! You see, I have been through a lot with someone that I have loved very dearly, who like you, grew up without defining principles to live by. I mad a very similar (almost exactly the same) list four years ago & we have consulted it time after time. There have been so many moments when I have wondered if an adult can learn these things and I see, through you, that they can... it just takes practice, practice, practice!
In my limited vision via the WWW, I see all of these qualities in you & I always find you to be inspirational (with an uncanny sense of timing too) Heck, this post, in and of itself, reflects many of these things! (You so beautiful!)

I have a set of principles by which I try to live (note the word 'try' - I'm not perfect, you know). My principles aren't in a neat list like yours and they just sort of float round my head instead. On it's most basic level, I try to think of others and always do the right thing. It doesn't always work out right and I tend to undervalue my own needs too often but I'm always learning and that's important. I think it's partly about finding a balance in the things we do.

I don't think I'm explaining myself very well so I'll stop now.
